Karlan Grant has a rare moment of freedom in attack and lets fly with a powerful low strike that stings the palms of Blades keeper Michael Cooper.

    Preston 1-0 Sheff Wed

Wednesday substitute Djeidi Gassama has made a good start.

He's lively to keep the ball in Owls possession and takes a hit before passing through to Josh Windass in the box but the forwards shot flies high.

Gassama then needs a few moments to recover to cause another early delay after kick-off.

  3. CLOSE!published at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

    Sheffield United 1-1 WBA

A huge save from Sheffield United keeper Michael Cooper.

He looked second-favourite there as the cross came in from West Bromwich Albion's right.

But he just gets his fingers on the ball to prevent a close-range headed chance for Albion.

I think they've done well overall to come back from 1-0 down after the mistake from Ousmane Diakite but he's done well after that.

We'll see what happens in the second half but they'll pleased going in at 1-1.

Teams don't like you running at them and Albion have done that very well.

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

A really exciting game. Sheffield United made a flying start, with Andre Brooks' calm finish giving them the lead.

West Bromwich Albion's Karlan Grant benefits from some luck as an initial shot hit team-mate Tom Fellows, but bounced into his path.

He slotted in to level the match and it feels like nothing less than Albion deserve.

A tap in from Emil Riis sends Preston ahead at the break.

Both sides have had a handful of chances but have, for the most part, failed to offer too much threat up top.

Can North End boss Paul Heckingbottom hold on to his first ever win against the Sheffield side or will Wednesday find a way?

  13. INJURY TIMEpublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

    Preston 1-0 Sheff Wed

Four minutes added onto the first half.

Pretty much all of it can be attributed to the injury to the assistant referee at the start of the match.

Sheffield Wednesday will be happy though as they chase a leveller before the break.

Poor defending from Norwich City in a first half of few clear chances.

The ball hits the unfortunate Canaries striker Ante Crnac and is into the net for an own goal.

  15. CLOSE!published at 13:18 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

    Preston 1-0 Sheff Wed

A handball call - the fourth of this match so far - against Dominic Iorfa supplies Preston with yet another set-piece.

It's outside the box but Sam Greenwood fancies his chances.

He whips in a direct shot but it just drags slightly to the left of the net.

They worked that goal with good passing between them and Karlan Grant hits it into the far corner.

It's a great cool strike, he's picked his spot.

Albion have got to stay strong now because Sheffield United are going to come at them strong.

    Karlan Grant (45 mins)

    It has been coming.

West Bromwich Albion are really patient in the penalty area as Sheffield United try to stop them from crossing or shooting.

The eventual strike from the edge of the box hit Tom Fellows and bounces back kindly for Karlan Grant.

His strike is low, hard and accurate and nestles into the bottom corner.

    Much better from Wednesday.

They weave between the Preston defence to find Shea Charles, who thrashes the ball above the bar.

The match is beginning to find its groove now.

  19. Postpublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

    Sheffield United 1-0 WBA

What Sheffield United have done really well in this game is to crowd around West Bromwich Albion players when they have the ball in midfield.

It led to a lively start when Jayson Molumby was dispossessed early on, and it took Albion a while to settle again.

Moreover, it also led to the only goal so far, when Ousmane Diakite overran the ball.

But the Baggies do still look very competitive and have had a couple of excellent chances.

  20. 'Albion have done well since conceding'published at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024
