    Preston 1-0 Sheff Wed

It's rumoured that Josh Bowler might not have long left at Preston North End but his curled cross into the box deflects off orange shirts to go out for a corner.

It's taken out wide and a wicked pass into the box draws Owls keeper James Beadle off his line in a brave attempt to collect.

The youngster is successful, getting the ball in his grasp to prevent a repeat of the first goal.

    Sheffield United 1-0 WBA

A pause in the game as it looks like Karlan Grant was caught in the face by a challenge from a Sheffield United player.

His nose is bleeding and he comes off the field briefly to change his shirt.

    Sheffield United 1-0 WBA

A clever free-kick routine from Sheffield United.

The ball is floated in from around 30 yards towards Kieffer Moore at the far post.

Moore heads the ball just over the bar.

Perhaps he could have aimed across the goal there, but strikers instinct, eh?

  5. CLOSE!published at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

    Sheffield United 1-0 WBA

Tom Fellows has his head in his hands.

West Bromwich Albion really ought to be level.

Karlan Grant cuts inside from the left onto his right foot and fires a stinging drive that is parried by Michael Cooper in the Sheffield United goal.

Fellows tries to react quickly but can only poke the ball high and over.

Preston's Sam Greenwood earns a free kick for his side in the Wednesday half and how costly it turns out to be for the visitors.

The Owls struggle to clear the ball out of the final third and it finally finds its way to Jack Whatmough, who just nudges a header to a lurking Emil Riis right in front of goal.

The forward taps it in for a easy goal and the home side go ahead.

Josh Maja will be disappointed with that.

He was fed the ball close to goal by West Bromwich Albion team-mate Karlan Grant, but it just gets a little stuck under his body and his low shot is gathered by Sheffield United keeper Michael Cooper.

Owls captain Barry Bannan sends in a dangerous looking cross towards Michael Smith but it's just out of reach and the forward has to try and chase it down.

He has competition from Preston's Andrew Hughes though and the defender manages to draw a foul to see a free kick go to the home side.

It's unfortunate. I think Ousmane Diakite lost possession and it's allowed Sheffield United to get a shot on goal.

His first touch is terrible and they get an effort on goal.

Can Albion respond now? That is the thing.

Sheffield United have got their tails up now and Albion have got to be careful not to give away a second.

Preston's Kaine Kesler-Hayden gets into yet another tussle, this time up the other end with midfielder Shea Charles, but the man in white is the one to come out victorious.

Though teammate Ali McCann doesn't fare so well against Charles and concedes a free kick.

Wednesday are the slightly more threatening side but it's not really got going so far.

Chris Wilder has his arms in the air as Sheffield United are unhappy with Darnell Furlong's challenge on Harrison Burrows.

The West Bromwich Albion defender seemed to lean in with his arm towards Burrows, who was caught in the face.

The fixture once made famous for the so-called "Battle of Bramall Lane", is becoming a really physical battle.

Andre Brooks is again heavily involved, firing just over the bar from the edge of the area.

West Bromwich Albion are quickly up the other end for their first opportunity of the match, with Callum Styles shooting straight at goalkeeper Michael Cooper.

  19. CLOSE!published at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 29 December 2024

Sheffield Wednesday are donning their neon orange shirts this afternoon and brightly they have begun.

Josh Windass finds himself with space in the box but a deflection sees his shot drag marginally wide for a corner.

But before they can take it, there's a lengthy delay after one of the assistant referees pulls a muscle and needs to swap places with the fourth official.

It's always a good away support.

It will be good for Ousmane Diakite to get some early touches in the game.
