  2. 'Jefte played dominant game'published at 20:33 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

Rangers manager Philippe Clement told BBC Sportsound: "We saw a lot of positive things, good offensive football, dominance and a lot of chances. One key point is to be more efficient with the chances, it has to be a game where you score four or five goals today for me and that’s what we need to do in the future.

"A lot of good movement without and with the ball, giving the right pass and finding the right spaces with new players coming in, for example.

"Jefte played a very good and dominant game. Big congratulations to our recruitment team for finding a player of that level at that age for that price. In two months, I think his value will be much bigger than for the amount that we bought him.

"I didn't see the images back but had a feeling when I saw the action live that the referee doubted about the foul of Cyriel [Dessers], but he made the right decision. He’s doubting so he didn’t whistle and waited until after the game was dead, if it’s a goal or not, together with his team to make the right decision."

  3. It was 'chaos' - Leveinpublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

St Johnstone manager Craig Levein says it was "chaos" when Rangers' first goal was being given following a VAR intervention.

"It was chaos for a while, didn't know exactly what had happened," he told BBC Sportsound.

"I thought it was a free-kick to us and had that confirmed by one of the officials so I didn’t pay much attention for two or three minutes until I realised something was going on and didn't realise VAR was involved until a minute after that.

"I couldn't fathom what they would be looking at and I’ve watched it myself and I think Jack [Sanders] gets fouled, he’s the one that ends up on the ground.

"I don't think the goal should have stood, simple as that. He did give the decisions, he did, he put his hand up to indicate it was a foul for us, so he gave the decision, what other way can you read that?

"Some of them are saying they thought they heard the whistle but my point is this, if he indicates it’s a free-kick for us, which he did, and everyone looks at him and stops, for me that's a mistake on his part.

"I dont know what excuse they're going to come up with, I’d love them to just come out and hold their hands up and say, 'I’m really sorry we got it wrong'. I don't know why it went to VAR, I wish someone could tell me."

  5. Rangers taken 'another step' - Clementpublished at 20:18 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

Rangers manager Philippe Clement tells Premier Sports: "I didn't see the images back. My staff said there was no foul by Cyriel [Dessers].

"Cup is always something dangerous. I wished we scored the second goal faster. We had a lot of shots. We had too many shots not on target.

    "It's another step."

On defender Robin Propper's first-half injury, Clement added: "I think it will be okay with Robin. It was dangerous to continue. I hope it will be okay during the week."

  6. 'Bizarre'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

St Johnstone manager Craig Levein tells Premier Sports regarding the Rangers opener: "Quite a lot of them said they stopped playing.

"I couldn't really work out what was going on at the time. Jack [Sanders] was adamant he was fouled from the back by [Cyriel] Dessers. Dessers comes in and barges him over.

"I just found it really bizarre. Everybody assumed it was a free-kick for us. I don't understand it."

  7. 'That's why I work hard'published at 19:59 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

Cyriel Dessers tells Premier Sports: "For me, it was not a foul, if it was a foul it was the other way around if anything I was celebrating then it stopped and I looked around, I needed a little bit of patience and then it was given as a goal.

"I think I'm on a good way on a good path, that's why I work hard every day and for the whole season hopefully."

  8. SFA on Dessers goalpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone

Regarding the opening goal, the Scottish FA have confirmed to BBC Scotland that referee Referee Matthew MacDermid's whistle was blown after Cyriel Dessers' shot had crossed the line.

The goal was initially disallowed for a foul by Dessers but, following a VAR intervention, the goal was given and Rangers led.

  9. 'Nothing compares to that feeling'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 17 August

    FT: Falkirk 2-0 Hearts

Falkirk scorer Ethan RossImage source, SNS

Falkirk scorer Ethan Ross told BBC Scotland: "Everybody could see it was hard but we fancy ourselves against anyone at home so we took the game right to them.

"They are the third best team in Scotland and I think against any big team you have to ride your luck and we did that at the start today but when they were missing chances we were growing into the game.

"Craig Gordon has made a few good saves from big Ross [MacIver] up top and then eventually got the first and Dylan [Tait] puts away the second and we defend for our lives and take away the win.

"Keelan [Adams] put a great ball into the box and thankfully I got in the end of it. There is nothing compares to that feeling. Celebrating in front of our own fans and they were brilliant and there is no other feeling that can compare."

  11. Ross County 'did not deserve an equaliser' - Cowiepublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 17 August

FT: The Spartans 1-0 Ross County

Ross County boss Don Cowie told BBC Sportsound: "Massive credit to Spartans. They thoroughly deserved to win the game. We let ourselves down badly today. We had a real opportunity to get into the quarter-final of the cup and we came up massively short.

"I wouldn't say there was not an effort but there was certainly a lack of quality. When we got punished that soon after half-time, it gave Spartans a real lift and belief to go on and get the result.

"We did not deserve any equaliser. We huffed and puffed. A couple of shots from long range and a couple of balls that flashed across goal, but not nearly enough.

"You always have to learn and reflect on a game. It just shows you have to be ready for every game. We've done really well at times this season and have received plaudits for it, and at the same time we now deserve all the criticism today."

  12. 'Everyone gave everything' for Spartanspublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 17 August

FT: The Spartans 1-0 Ross County

The Spartans manager Dougie Samuel told BBC Sportsound: "In a nutshell, everyone gave everything today and executed the game plan really well. It wasn't just about sitting in a low block all game, I think we did carry a threat going forward. Early on, we had a couple of opportunities through Cammy Russell that gave us a bit of confidence and belief.

"I'm the luckiest guy in the world. I have been given time to build more than one team here and I'm working with a really special group of people first and foremost, who happen to also be talented footballers. If you watch people like [Jamie] Dishington and Russell today, working their socks off for their colleagues and peers - just phenomenal. I feel very lucky and blessed to be at the helm at this time.

"History will show that he [Blair Henderson] has been one of the most significant signings in the club's history, if not the most significant. I am delighted for him. He's in a good place right now, he's started the season well and he's our talisman at the top end.

"We have taken the jersey to new heights. That's what you are trying to do each season. Keep raising standards and keep raising the bar. Setting targets for others to follow. I'm well aware I am standing on the shoulders of giants at this football club. There were people before me that did special things here. It's been very much a journey of organic growth and we'll keep going in that way.

"I'd love to play - well, I can't say the Old Firm because I'm a Hibs fan so I'm hoping they will win tomorrow - but the Old Firm would be amazing. Anyone at home who packs the place out, because this is a special arena when there is 3,500 people in it. But for the players, I hope it's away to a Premiership team with a sell out."

Not a vintage performance but the holders are through to the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals.

Rangers went ahead in controversial circumstances as Cyriel Dessers' initially disallowed goal was given following a VAR intervention and Ross McCausland added a late second.
