Cornish out-scored Cambridge by six tries to five

Cornish Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle says he was disappointed with his side's second-half showing in their 40-33 Championship win at Cambridge.

Pirates led 26-7 at half-time after Morgan Nelson, Joe Elderkin, Matt McNab and Josh Williams had all scored in a 15-minute spell.

Ruaridh Dawson and Harry Dugmore crossed after the break as Cambridge scored four second-half tries.

Pirates' bonus-point win moves them up to third place in the Championship.

"The five points is all you can get, but the level of performance in that second half wasn't good enough," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"We gave Cambridge a lot of opportunities. Even in the first half I felt we gave them unnecessary entries and eventually you're going to get punished.

"We've got some fix-ups defensively and there are some penalties there we should not be giving away."

The game at second-from-bottom Cambridge was Pirates' first in the league since 23 December and Cattle said he felt his side looked like they had had four weeks off.

"Five points on the road is a positive and you're always going to take learnings when you've won the game, so we'll do that," he added.

"But there's a bit of ring rust there, that is part of it, but we've just got to be better, it's as simple as that."
