Summary

  1. Postpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 22 April

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford was one of the players who suffered the most in the side's recent spell in the Premier League, after joining the club from Manchester City following their last promotion to the top tier.

His reputation as one of the rising stars in England's successful under-21s side took a battering as the Clarets conceded 78 goals in their 38 games last season, but the 22-year-old has bounced back to underpin Burnley's resolute defence this campaign with 29 clean sheets in the Championship...

  2. 'Leeds, you'll have to watch your back!'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 22 April

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Burnley fan George Pool spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about promotion deja vu:

"Absolutely delighted, feels like deja vu though we've been here, seen it and done it all before. Last time we were up in the Premier League, we really struggled.

"But the way we've been able to make a record-breaking, history-making defence this year has been incredible.

"Josh Brownhill himself has scored more than we've conceded all season, which I find pretty remarkable for a midfielder.

"Leeds, you'll have to watch your back!"

  3. 'It brings in so much business'published at 12:59 British Summer Time 22 April

    David Unsworth
Former Burnley and Everton defender on BBC Radio Lancashire

I remember the first time Burnley got promoted to the top tier in a long time and it did so much for the town, it brings in so much business.

It brings so much money to not just the football club but to the area too. The players won't see that side of things.

Burnley can now look forward to a 10th season in the Premier League.

Their best finish came during the 2017-18 season under Sean Dyche, taking seventh and booking a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

A six-season stay ended in 2021-22 and the Clarets have since then moved backwards and forwards between the two divisions.

  5. 'You're lucky to experience so many promotions'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 22 April

    Peter Gillibrand
    BBC Newsbeat

We've been chatting to Burnley fan Molly, who was at Turf Moor last night: "It was never-wracking and exciting."

She's 18 now and has supported the team since she was born, thanks to her Dad, Austin.

Molly says the promotion is "weird to her... because my dad was saying to me 'you're lucky to experience so many promotions in your lifetime'.

"It feels good to get it out of the way instead of dragging it out to the last few games. Wining the title maybe now, but I don't know if it's going to happen. The main thing is going up."

Molly's dad hops on the call: "She's had five [promotions] in her lifetime. I think I maybe had one before she was born in my lifetime. She's a lucky omen."

Burnley were last promoted in the 2022-23 season under Vincent Kompany, but were relegated the following season.

  6. You just hope Parker is given an opportunity - Duffpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 22 April

    Burnley 2 -1 Sheff Utd

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Burnley defender Michael Duff told BBC Radio 5 Live that he hopes the club keep faith with Scott Parker next season in the Premier League:

"You just hope he's given an opportunity. There are going to be tough times next season, there's going to be tough runs. And that's when it is important - you are a good manager and he's proven that and he's not going to be become a bad manager in a three or four game spell.

"They will go through three or four games without a win next year, there's no doubt about that.

"I think he's been a really wise appointment. He's not had a lot of credit this year Scott. And you look at the records we've been talking about, they've got an opportunity to get 100 points in a really relentless league. I'm really pleased for him."

  7. JJ Watt to aid Burnley's transfer window?published at 12:52 British Summer Time 22 April

Like Leeds, Burnley is American-owned with ALK Capital LLC taking majority ownership of the Clarets. This group is led by Alan Pace, who serves as the club's chairman.

On top of this, former NFL player JJ Watt is a minority stakeholder in the club as they look ahead to an important summer transfer window.

  8. 'Parker has to be in the running for manager of the season'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 22 April

    David Unsworth
Former Burnley and Everton defender on BBC Radio Lancashire

We've got to think about what success looks like for Scott Parker next season.

If he survives it's a successful season. That's how you build the club, that's what Sean Dyche did.

I hope he's backed in the transfer market and given the money he deserves. He's got to be in the running for manager of the season.

Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen, speaking on the Monday Night Club, on what manager Scott Parker's message was at the start of the season: "It was the attitude first and foremost that we couldn't waste a minute. Every minute we had in the training ground, on the pitch, or in the meeting room. What we needed to work on and that we were going to be relentless in everything we do, we are going to leave no stone unturned.

"He came in with that message from the start. He said he believed in us as a group at the start of the season, that is why he took the job and it was over to us to repay that faith in him.

"We have worked so hard and all the people behind the scenes that don't perform on matchday: the physios, the analysts, the coaching staff they have all been amazing."

  10. Three time's a charm for Parkerpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 22 April

Burnley boss Scott Parker completed a hat-trick of promotions from the Championship as a manager with three different clubs - Fulham in 2020, Bournemouth in 2022 and now the Clarets in 2025.

    What an achievement!

    Burnley 2-1 Sheffield United

    David Unsworth
Former Burnley and Everton defender on BBC Radio Lancashire

I'm absolutely delighted for Burnley. They've gone under the radar, Leeds and Sheffield United for so long were the dominant two.

Their defensive record has been outstanding. Every single man out there today has done a brilliant job.

They've achieved something they'll never forget.

They've created rocking chair memories for themselves. What they have done today is something they will never ever forget.

It's very difficult to bounce back from the Premier League at the first time of asking and they did it with two games to spare.

  12. 'It's not a bad thing to keep winning every week'published at 12:34 British Summer Time 22 April

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Burnley defender Michael Duff praised the defensive prowess of Scott Parker's side on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, highlighting their 29 clean sheets as the ideal platform for their promotion:

"I don't think anyone going into the season can ever imagine them being so defensively solid. It's been the platform. It's not a bad thing to keep winning every week.

"[A total of] 31 games unbeaten in a league like the Championship, which is relentless and every game is a tough game, is an unbelievable achievement.

"They've done exactly what they wanted to do. Now can they go up and stay up?"

  13. Three moments that helped Burnley win promotionpublished at 12:31 British Summer Time 22 April

While relegation has hit Luton hard, Burnley dropped down from the Premier League in the same season and have bounced straight back.

Let's take a look at three key moments from their promotion bid:

    • 14 September - Luca Koleosho scored the only goal of the game as Burnley secured three points against promotion rivals Leeds at Elland Road
    • 26 December - Another game against a promotion rival, another clean sheet and another win. Burnley took on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day and came away with a dominant 2-0 win
    • 5 April - Burnley showed their comeback powers in a brilliant 2-1 win at play-off chasing Coventry to send the Clarets top of the league. A draw and three wins followed to clinch promotion.

  14. Perhaps Luton 'suffering hangover from relegation'published at 12:22 British Summer Time 22 April

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Stephen: What's gone wrong at Luton this season? After relegation from the Premier League, they are now in danger of being relegated to League One.

Hi, Stephen. Well they’re not done yet after a great win against Bristol City yesterday.

Hard to put a finger on it, really. I thought they acquitted themselves well in the Premier League and then manager Rob Edwards did a fine job. There is no shame in just not being good enough when you give your all, as Luton's players and manager did.

Perhaps it was a hangover from relegation for players and manager, who simply could not quite re-adjust to the disappointment and the different requirements of the Championship.

I still think Edwards will return and do a good job somewhere else – while Luton are still in there fighting to stay up.

It would be a desperate blow to go down to League One after being in the Premier League last season.

  16. Norwich latest Championship club to sack their managerpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 22 April

Johannes Hoff ThorupImage source, Getty Images

Leeds and Burnley are celebrating their promotion into the Premier League but their joy means other clubs miss out on automatic promotion, while yet more contenders are also dropping out of the play-off race.

West Brom, who are 10th in the Championship, fall into that category and yesterday sacked manager Tony Mowbray after they fell six points outside the play-offs with two games remaining.

Now 14th-placed Norwich City have also taken action, sacking manager Johannes Hoff Thorup following a 3-1 loss to Millwall.

Former England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will take interim charge of Norwich for their final two games of the season.

  17. Can Burnley provide a sterner test?published at 12:07 British Summer Time 22 April

That brings us to Burnley and their recent experience of the Premier League.

Vincent Kompany took them up in 2022-23 as Championship title winners, on the back of a 101-point haul as they swept all before them in the second tier.

But the Clarets struggled to impose themselves in the top flight under the former Manchester City midfielder, with their open style of play proving too easy for Premier League sides to unpick.

Will Scott Parker's current vintage provide a sterner test for top-flight opponents?

They have the meanest defence in the Championship, with England under-21 international goalkeeper James Trafford conceding just 15 goals and keeping 29 clean sheets.

How Leeds and Burnley do will depend on who they can bring in over the summer, and if they can adapt, something Burnley failed to do last time. Wolves could be facing a player exodus and if Manchester United and Spurs fail in the Europa League, what next for them? Between 13th and 17th is currently a two-point gap. Can any of them improve next year?

  19. Promoted teams need 'smart management and smart recruitment'published at 11:51 British Summer Time 22 April

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Steve: Hi Phil, realistically, what can promoted teams to the Premier League do when they need to invest tens of millions to compete, but have to stay within PSR? Is the financial system biased to those already in the league and established? What could be changed?

Hello, Steve. I take all your points on board and agree with them but I think it comes down to the old adage. Recruitment. Recruitment. Recruitment.

Leeds United, Burnley and whoever comes up with them have to use their Premier League money smartly and hope those they bring in can keep them up.

I would hate to see it become a trend where three teams come up and three go straight back down, as will be happening this season.

Smart management. Smart recruitment. And hopefully a decent start so you do not get cut adrift and drained of confidence like Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton this season.

  20. Premier League predictable? It hasn't always been this way...published at 11:46 British Summer Time 22 April

    Oh Daniel.

We included your message because it is actually reflective of a general sentiment, after two seasons in which the clubs promoted from the Championship have - barring a miracle for Ipswich - gone straight back down.

It might all be starting to feel a little predictable, but reality is not always quite as it seems.

In 2022-23 - the season before this current trend took hold - all three clubs promoted from the Championship stayed up.

The second tier's 2021-22 champions Fulham, runners-up Bournemouth and play-off winners Nottingham Forest all came through a survival battle to cement their place in the top flight and now look at them.

All three are in serious contention for a European place next season, with Forest currently in third place in the Premier League, Bournemouth in eighth and Fulham ninth.

In fact, before the past two seasons, only once before in the Premier League era had all three clubs promoted from the Championship gone straight back down - when Barnsley, Bolton and Crystal Palace were relegated in the 1997-98 season.
