Burnley and whoever wins the play-offs can only struggle. Leeds, with the might of the 49ers financial backing (how well they have done?) will be different. No reason why they can’t become another Newcastle!

  2. 'Leeds will be a lot more like the teams who have come up more recently'published at 09:36 British Summer Time

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The Athletic on Monday Night Club

If you look at the teams who have come up and stayed up like Brentford and Brighton, they have had a thing they do well. Whether it's off pitch - data recruitment - or whether it is a defined style of play on it. I think you can probably put Burnley being defensive and cautious as maybe a competitive edge to a certain extent.

Leeds will be a lot more like the teams who have come up more recently. [Daniel] Farke plays a certain way but as a Leeds well wisher I would like to see them go and sign some really experienced, battle-hardened defenders and defensive midfielders in the summer. They have the attacking talent, they can score goals in the Premier League but they will ship a lot unless they solidify fairly rapidly and impressively.

Fantastic season with the usual Leeds emotional rollercoaster. Now need a long hard look at the squad to survive. The depth has been pretty good for the Championship, but some of the best performers are loanees (Rothwell, Solomon). Great to see Harry Gray make his debut. He’s a future Premiership 10. Sadly Aaronson isn’t. On the basis of 2 per position, and if Rothwell and Solomon leave, we need a quality 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11. Now’s the time for the 49ers to show they’re serious investors in the club.

  4. 'Fans are going to have to get on board that their teams are going to be looking to grind out results'published at 09:28 British Summer Time

    Joe Hart
Former Burnley goalkeeper on Monday Night Club

He [Scott Parker, Burnley manager] has made it very clear he wants a rock solid team. I have seen that it was his third promotion. That is impressive. He knows what to do in that Championship and he knows how to win games. There is no way he is going to come away from that next season. Absolutely no way, especially after what he has seen in the last two seasons from newly promoted sides.

I think fans are going to have to get on board that their teams are going to be looking to grind out results, earn their status in the Premier League. Entitlement is one word that has been used but it is that optimism of coming into the Premier League thinking 'we are really going to establish ourselves and put our football on the map in the Premier League from day one'.

I think it has been shown over the last two seasons what an impressive league this is and you really have to be squeaky clean if you want to play that sort of football because you will get picked apart and hurt. The teams coming up now will address that with a clear game plan and right down the other end of the scale of what we are seeing at the very top.

  5. What do promoted sides need to buck recent trend?published at 09:24 British Summer Time

    Championship

Jim puts it pretty bluntly there, but that is the reality.

The three teams that were promoted from the Championship last season - champions Leicester City, runners-up Ipswich Town and play-off winners Southampton - are destined to be relegated from the Premier League.

Leicester and Southampton's relegation is already confirmed, Ipswich are 15 points from safety with five games remaining.

It is a repeat of the 2023-24 season, when Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United made an instant return to the Championship.

So what do this season's promoted sides need to do to buck this trend?

Like all clubs being promoted from the Championship, it takes a huge effort to realise their ambition of staying in the Premier League. Best of luck to the other team who makes promotion as Leeds and Burnley have. But as seen this year the gap is getting bigger to be able to survive, as the three who went up are coming back to the Championship. It's very hard to try and stay in the Prem, as they have found out. Best of luck.

  7. Tuesday's headlines so farpublished at 09:09 British Summer Time

Good morning to those who are just joining us.

We have been focusing on Burnley and Leeds United's automatic promotion to the Premier League, which was confirmed by Monday's results in the Championship.

Here is what has been discussed so far:

We will continue to have a look at their promotions this morning before assessing what both sides need to do to survive in the Premier League.

Later today, we will take a look at Nottingham Forest's victory over Tottenham, while BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty will join us for a Q&A.

  8. Who's been in the top two the longest?published at 09:02 British Summer Time

Although they will have a second chance at promotion through the play-offs, Sheffield United may feel like they've let the Premier League slip through their fingers.

Chris Wilder's side have spent 143 days in the Championship's top two but four defeats in their last five games have seen them drop to third.

Burnley, on the other hand, have spent only 76 days in the top two while fourth-placed Sunderland have been up there for 100 days.

Top of the table Leeds have shown their Premier League credentials having made their 144 days in the top two count.

I've seen the best and the worst of Leeds Utd and the thing that sums up the greatest Leeds teams is skill, obviously, and great team spirit. We've got loads of the latter, but we need more of the skill. It's not just about money, as teams like Bournemouth and Brentford have proved. It's about getting the balance right and this is now Farke's biggest test of his life! I hope and pray he is up to it.

Austin S, Leeds fan for over 60 years

An amazing night, for both Burnley and Leeds. As a Leeds fan I know the heartache of the play offs and pleased we have avoided that, particularly after last season. Realistically we need to strengthen and would love to see James Milner back as part of that strengthening.

    John, happy Leeds fan

Overjoyed, of course. Drove my neighbours mad yesterday, listening to the goals go in! A nagging realism though is whether we can be a Nottingham Forest rather than a Leicester City next season? The team needs a strategic review...who to keep and who to hold on to? I'll start the ball rolling...Bamford?

  10. 'I think all season going into every game we have felt that feeling'published at 08:50 British Summer Time

    Leeds Utd 6-0 Stoke City

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Leeds United winger Dan James, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club about winning promotion: "I think for us it has been such a long season and what happened last season we were gutted not to get in the top two and go up. We had to dust ourselves down in the play-offs and we got so far and we got all the way to the end of May and we didn't quite get it.

"I think all season going into every game we have felt that feeling. The last three or four games especially, when we were eight points clear and the gap closed, the boys who were there last season and had that feeling of how good we were to not go up, we didn't want that again.

"It was about keeping pushing and the last three games we have been unbelievable. We played with full confidence."

  11. Leeds bounce back from play-off heartbreakpublished at 08:46 British Summer Time

Like Burnley, Leeds had to dust themselves off and go again this season.

Daniel Farke's side were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley last year and were condemned to another campaign in the Championship.

It looks as if that disappointment only spurred them on. They now sit top of the league having scored 89 goals - 22 more than second-highest scorers Norwich - and sealed automatic promotion with two games remaining.

I think Burnley have a better chance of staying up than last time under Vincent Kompany if they can keep goalkeeper James Trafford, Egan Riley and Maxime Esteve. Last time in the Premier League we didn't have the skill to play out (or coaching direction to mix it with a long ball) from the back and easily got picked off by fast PL presses. We also need an easier set of fixtures to get the season going to build confidence.

    Burnley 2-1 Sheff Utd

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Burnley's Josh Cullen, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club about winning promotion into the Premier League: "Absolutely delighted. It's been a great day and a nice reward for a great season.

"I wouldn't say we focused on being the last game [of the day]. The task was clear, we knew that whatever happened elsewhere if we won today then we would be going up. We were just full focus on what we needed to do. Knowing what was on the line there was a little extra edge about the place, we wanted to get it done and thankfully we could perform and get over the line. We are all buzzing."

A lot can change in a year!

This time last year, Burnley were staring relegation in the face and eventually were sent back to the Championship with just 24 points.

Fast forward a year and Scott Parker's side have secured their place back into the top flight having conceded just 15 goals.

  16. Title race - top two's final two gamespublished at 08:15 British Summer Time

Now the promotion pressure is off, thoughts will turn to the title race for Leeds and Burnley fans.

Both sides have won the second tier title four times in their history - Leeds' last title came in the 2019-20 season, while Burnley won the Championship under Vincent Kompany in 2022-23.

Leeds have a slight edge this season, with a superior goal difference, so will more than likely claim a fifth title if they win their remaining two matches.

Here are the final two fixtures for both sides:

    Leeds

    • 28 Apr: Bristol City (h)
    • 03 May: Plymouth (a)

    Burnley

    • 26 Apr: QPR (a)
    • 03 May: Millwall (h)

So who will win the title?

    • Thumbs up for Leeds
    • Thumbs down for Burnley

Congratulations Leeds and Burnley. But as a West Ham fan, Leeds coming up makes me nervous. They’re a huge club, they can survive, build, thrive, and challenge at the next level if managed correctly at board and team level. I don’t think it’s inevitable that they’ll go straight back down but someone has to go down, hence my nervousness at their return during our poor form. Not so sure about Burnley, although I’m a big Scott Parker fan! Anyway, despite the nervousness, I’m made up for two proper clubs and fan bases. Good luck and welcome back!

  18. Highest points tallies in second tier historypublished at 07:59 British Summer Time

For the record, whether or not Leeds and/or Burnley do reach 100 points, they will still fall short of the record points tally for a second-tier season.

Believe it or not, six teams have finished with more than 100 points.

The last to do it was Burnley in 2023, when Vincent Kompany's side clinched the title with 101 points, while Reading's all time-record of 106 points remains safe for another season.

The Royals won 31 of their 46 games under Steve Coppell, losing just two, on their way to the 2005-06 Championship title.

Highest points tallies in second-tier history:

    • 106 - Reading (2005-06)
    • 105 - Sunderland (1998-99)
    • 102 - Leicester (2013-14), Newcastle (2009-10)
    • 101 - Burnley (2022-23), Fulham (2000-01) 99 - Wolves (2017-18), Chelsea (1988-89), Man City (2001-02)

  19. Can Leeds & Burnley reach 100 points?published at 07:57 British Summer Time

Martin's message to Burnley fans does seem to reflect the goodwill between the two sets of supporters after the unique scenario on Monday of Leeds relying on a Clarets win over Sheffield United to seal promotion for both clubs.

But Leeds and Burnley will now switch back into title rivals for the final two matches of the season.

They are separated by goal difference, with both clubs capable of finishing on 100 points if they win their remaining fixtures.

Believe it or not, but no side has ever finished a season with exactly 100 points in the second-tier of English football - whether that is over a 46-game campaign or otherwise.

Sides have finished just under and just above, but never hit the 100 mark on the button...and this season we could have two sides achieve that feat. But only one can win the title...

Yes they can make an impact, but the board need to secure Brownhill and CJ firstly, sign the loan players that showed commitment, then fill the gaps with experience. It's a tough gig!

Leeds fan here. Congratulations to Burnley, best defence in the league. Commiserations to Sheffield United who have made a hell of a fight of it. So delighted for Leeds and for the fans. Means so much to this club. Well done Daniel and the team, tremendous effort. Now win the league!
