The question is, will Leeds have learned any lessons from their last stint in the Premier League.

They last earned promotion to the top flight as champions of the second tier in 2019-20 - enigmatic Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa restoring their status after a 16-year hiatus.

Leeds finished a promising ninth in the Premier League on their return, with a team featuring the likes of Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

But that was as good as it got.

Bielsa left midway through the following season after a dismal campaign that did not improve under his replacement, Jesse Marsch.

After finishing 17th under Marsch, the American was let go the following season with the club in the middle of another relegation scrap that even the great escape artist Sam Allardyce could not rescue them from.

The hope is that Farke can lead them to a longer stay in the Premier League this time around.

  3. New era for Leeds at the top tablepublished at 11:27 British Summer Time

    Adam Pope
    BBC Radio Leeds commentator

The nature of Leeds United is that the expectation will soon be beyond just surviving one season in the toughest league in the world. I expect Daniel Farke will be backed by the owners unlike his time post winning two titles at Norwich City.

The 49ers and their investors seem very in tune with and supportive of Farke, who has produced a phenomenon by rebuilding a side which has already scored 89 goals and racked up 94 points with two games remaining.

Silverware would be a fitting end to the first part of his mission at Elland Road, but already they can steal a march by planning with certainty for the next - a new era at the top table.

Right, let's continue our assessment of the two promoted clubs and their chances of Premier League survival.

We were discussing Leeds before breaking off, so let's quickly check out their recent history in the top flight before switching to Burnley.

Amazingly, Leeds have only had three seasons in the top flight during the past two decades.

But they went into the very start of the Premier League, in the 1992-93 season, as the reigning top-flight champions were a regular fixture up until their first relegation at the end of the 2003-04 season.

Leeds provided the original cautionary tale, after "reaching for the stars" under former chairman Peter Ridsdale, and did not return to the top flight for another 16 years.

After finally winning promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020-21, they were only able to keep their place for three seasons.

    Leeds' Premier League campaigns:

    • 1992-93 - 17th
    • 1993-94 - 5th
    • 1994-95 - 5th
    • 1995-96 - 13th
    • 1996-97 - 11th
    • 1997-98 - 5th
    • 1998-99 - 4th
    • 1999-00 - 3rd
    • 2000-01 - 4th
    • 2001-02 - 5th
    • 2002-03 - 15th
    • 2003-04 - 19th (relegated)
    • 2020-21 - 9th
    • 2021-22 - 17th
    • 2022-23 - 19th (relegated)

Norwich fan here, who experienced four great years under Daniel Farke. He led the players and the fans to two Championship titles, forging an incredible atmosphere as he did so. Big respect to Leeds for achieving promotion. Even bigger respect to Farke for doing it again, despite the Wembley heartbreak last year and all the turmoil behind the scenes in his first season. To the Leeds hierarchy, I'd just implore them to back the manager as much as they can. We couldn't do it, and we came straight back down twice. Give Farke the tools and he'll do the job. He's a diamond. Leeds are lucky to have him.

    Jermaine Beckford
Former Leeds, Leicester and Everton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jermaine Beckford waxed lyrical about Daniel Farke on BBC Radio 5 Live for turning things around with Leeds United:

"When you've got players such as Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville - three key players leaving in the summer, after missing out in the play-offs - who would have foreseen the overturn in fortunes?

"The players that came in - man for man - may not have been good individually as the players that left. But what they did bring was unity and team spirit.

"Leeds have got 27 wins this season, they got 28 under Biesla - the last time we went up. But we've scored more goals, conceded less goals, we've got more points. It's phenomenal, but those stats do get overlooked because Daniel Farke is not Marcelo Biesla."

  9. What changes do Leeds need to make for Premier League football?published at 10:48 British Summer Time

Dan James runningImage source, Getty Images

Of the current squad Dan James, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu look capable of coping with the step up and there is an argument to suggest Ao Tanaka, Jayden Bogle and Willy Gnonto could follow suit. The latter pair have 74 appearances between them in the Premier League already.

Joel Piroe, who is the Championship’s leading scorer with 19 goals, has the quality to finish at the top level if not the pace required. It will be interesting to see if the club make a permanent move for winger Manor Solomon because at times the Spurs loanee has looked a huge cut above his Championship opponents.

But as many as eight players may be required throughout the spine of the team.

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Much is being made of the financial backing that the 49ers can bring to Leeds. However the PSR rules in the Premier League will restrict that even if we wanted to spend big. That’s one of the reasons the promoted teams struggle. I’d be pleasantly surprised if Leeds were any different

    Simon

Amazing to go up after a bit of a wobble (like last year). It’s not as simple as saying that you need to spend money to stay up, other clubs have done that and failed. We have to strengthen for sure, but we need to look at clubs like Forest who play their way and don’t get sucked into playing possession football. It’ll be down to great management.

  11. 'Financially, Leeds are in as solid a position as I can recall'published at 10:34 British Summer Time

    Adam Pope
    BBC Radio Leeds commentator

Just as the pyrotechnics at the Elland Road promotion party began upon the full-time whistle at Turf Moor, I received an email that said West Brom had parted company with head coach Tony Mowbray.

Immediately his words after the Baggies 1-1 draw at Leeds in March came to mind, that Leeds might need to spend around £200 million to have a realistic chance of surviving in the Premier League if they secure promotion.

Football in a nutshell hey, unbridled joy at one ground, the sacking of a manager at another and the existential dread of being able to compete at any of them in the top flight next season.

Financially, Leeds are in as solid a position as I can recall, despite recording a £60m loss for the year to June 30th 2024.

They return to the top-flight whilst in receipt of parachute payments and have stayed within PSR. Broadcast revenues will now grow exponentially and commercial and matchday income will inevitably increase.

  12. But are Leeds prepared to spend to stay up?published at 10:28 British Summer Time

Given the riches of the Premier League, it is becoming increasingly difficult for newly-promoted sides to maintain their top-flight status at the end of the season.

This is where the summer transfer window comes into play.

Leeds are owned by the San Francisco-based 49ers Enterprises group, with investors including American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Red Bull also bought a minority stake in the club last May.

So money may well be there to spend.

Over the moon with Leeds promotion. They've really deserved it. Now we just need to spend big. We can't survive the Premier League without spending big. Time to use that Red Bull money!

    Kieran

As a Leeds fan I’m obviously delighted to have returned to the Premier League. However, the present squad is not good enough to stay up. We need strengthening throughout. I would start with trying to sign Ramsdale - the Southampton goalkeeper.

    Steve, Norwich

Last time we were in the Premier League, I don't think we strengthened as much as we should have. We have the flair and the talent in the likes of Dan James and Manor Solomon. Just need those experienced heads. Absolutely elated to be going up though!

  14. Three moments that helped Leeds secure promotionpublished at 10:21 British Summer Time

After spending the last two seasons in the Championship, Leeds are back in the big time.

Here are three standout moments that helped push them towards the Premier League:

    • 23 August - Leeds have lift-off...finally. After suffering heartbreak in last season's play-off final, Daniel Farke's side did not register a first win until three games into the current campaign - a 2-0 victory over rivals Sheffield Wednesday set them on their way
    • 24 February - After conceding in the 14th minute, Leeds staged an impressive late comeback with Junior Firpo, Ao Tanaka and Joe Piroe all scored late on for a vital three points at promotion rivals Sheffield United
    • 21 April - Promotion secured. Leeds went into their home match with Stoke knowing promotion was within their grasp. They showed no sign of nerves, with Joe Piroe sending them on their way to a 6-0 win.

Daniel Farke deserves so much credit, rebuilt Leeds two summers in a row from what appears to have been a real mess. Smart guy, high EQ, let’s give him all our support in the Premier League - top leader and top fire beast!!

    Roger, Guildford

Daniel Farke has proved over the last two seasons that he is more than capable of building a winning team. However, it will need some serious investment from the 49ers to support him to do this. He didn’t have the money to do it when he came up twice with Norwich, and as much as I hate the sums of money that are splashed around in the Premier League, unfortunately having to spend big is the reality if we want to be in the PL for the long term.

    Sam

A lot has been made about our squad being the best in the league, but nobody was saying that in August after we sold Georgi and then not long after lost both our starting CMs. Farke has done an incredible job, overcoming the huge disappointment of Wembley and getting the best out of the relatively unheralded new comers and moulding a vibrant attacking and defensively sound team. It's all about the recruitment for next season but with our current owners, we've got a much better chance of pushing on than last time.

  17. What's happened so far this morning?published at 10:08 British Summer Time

Just checking in to see what has happened in the football world? We have you covered.

We are currently looking at Leeds and Burnley's promotion and what their chances are of keeping their place in the Premier League next season. Here's the top lines so far:

We will keep a focus on those stories for now, but a little later we will take a look at Nottingham Forest's move back up to third place in the Premier League.

And BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty will soon be joining us to answer your footballing questions.

  18. Can Parker & Farke take the next step?published at 10:01 British Summer Time

You are correct Martin, Scott Parker does indeed have a decent record of promotion from the Championship.

He led Fulham up in the 2019-20 season, Bournemouth up in 2021-22 and now Burnley this season.

But guess what, his record is matched by Leeds boss Daniel Farke, who led Norwich to two promotions from the Championship in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

The issue for both managers is can they take the next step and help their promoted clubs gain a foothold in the Premier League after struggling to make a name for themselves in the top flight.

Get Involved - 'I'm hoping promoted teams don't panic sack'published at 09:53 British Summer Time

Is there anyone better than Scott Parker at managing clubs to promotion from the Championship? He's done it with three different clubs now. The question is, will the clubs promoted stick with the managers that won promotion when the going gets tough in the Premier League? Norwich sacked Farke and never recovered, Leeds sacked Bielsa and have only just recovered. I'm hoping next season's promoted teams don't panic sack and appoint some random successor who is clueless how to keep a newly promoted team up.

  20. 'It will be interesting, the summer of recruitment'published at 09:46 British Summer Time

    Chris Sutton
Former Chelsea striker on Monday Night Club

It's going to be really difficult for them [newly promoted sides]. If you look at the bottom three this season, Ipswich conceded 71 goals, Leicester 73, Southampton 78. That is more than two goals every game they are conceding. It is nigh on impossible to stay in the Premier League, if that is the case.

It will be interesting, the summer of recruitment, because you feel they need to be a little bit stronger at the top end of the pitch.

A lot was made about Vincent Kompany and his brand of football, it is just that first season. Trying to get that foothold, just staying in the Premier League, no matter how you do it, try and get over the line.

Having a solid foundation, that is the best way to go, but it is a level up. That's the issue.
