Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says his team needs time to "build a different way of playing".

Since Amorim's arrival in November, the Red Devils have impressed most in away games against big sides - drawing at Anfield and winning 2-1 at Etihad Stadium in the Premier League before beating Arsenal on penalties in the FA Cup.

Amorim says his players "have to deliver" tonight.

"The most difficult thing to train in one team is the way you build with the ball and in the final third the way you create situations," the United boss said.

"That is what a big team should do very well and for that we also need time to train. We have had for a long time a lack of goals.

"We don't spend a lot of times during games in the last third with the ball - we did it against Nottingham Forest but we need to improve in that part of the game.

"I understand in this moment it is OK to play like that against Liverpool and Arsenal - against Arsenal we waited for the opportunity but in the future you cannot play like that and I know that but we need time to build a different way of playing.

"In the future we are going to focus a lot on that."

Ipswich finally got the deal for Jaden Philogene over the line on Wednesday, but not in time for the winger to play a part against Brighton tonight.

Signed from Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £20m, the 22-year-old has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract at Portman Road.

He made 11 Premier League appearances for Villa this season and made his Champions League debut against Bayern Munich last October.

A product of the Villa academy, Philogene bagged 12 goals and six assists for Hull in the Championship last season before re-signing for the Premier League side in July.

The England U-21 international is Ipswich's 15th signing of the season.

    Ipswich v Brighton (19:30 GMT)

Wolves' 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Wednesday meant that Ipswich leapfrogged Vitor Pereira's side into 17th place on goal difference.

And Kieran McKenna will now hope to put some space between his side and the relegation zone when they welcome Brighton to Portman Road.

Ipswich have form on their side as they beat Chelsea and drew Fulham in their most recent Premier League games before a 3-0 defeat of League One side Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup third round.

Brighton, on the other hand, head into the game on the back of four league draws on the spin before a 4-0 win against Norwich City in the FA Cup.

Ipswich's last home game against Chelsea was a huge confidence booster.

To back it up with a draw away at Fulham is really good - it is about building momentum.

Ipswich have been so close through the course of the season [of getting more points].

This is the moment - they have to capitalise on those opportunities.

For the majority of our games, we have not played badly other than West Ham away and Newcastle at home when we had a battering.

We have not played particularly bad, and our football is good.

Kieran McKenna knows what he’s doing, and he puts out his best squad – we do play good football.

Are we going to keep him as Ipswich manager?

If things don’t work out like they could then there could be a big six team that want him - it wouldn’t surprise me.

Joe Cole said, “He is the world’s most wanted football manager”.

It wouldn’t surprise me as the style of football is phenomenal.

    Ipswich v Brighton (19:30 GMT)

    Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna speaking to TNT Sports: "Sam Morsy and Kalvin Philips are both in good form. Sam is having a really strong season and Kalvin has come into some good form now after his injury. He is unavailable for the game on Sunday [against Manchester City]. So we felt it was the right time to share the minutes and give Kalvin a start."

On having Omari Hutchinson back and losing Sammie Szmodics: "You don't want to lose Sammie. He's had a good season, but it's nice to have Omari back. He had a really good home game against Chelsea last time and he'll be looking to have a good one again tonight."

On George Hirst: "We missed him a lot, to be honest. He has had a couple of injuries this season. He's been very unlucky. He always gives us a boost and he is a really important member of the squad. Having him back is a lift for everyone."

On the chance to pull away from the relegation zone: "We don't think about it. It's another great game for us. It's our last home night game of the season. So it's gone quick. We want to enjoy each one and make it a special occasion. We want performances and points and we will try to get that tonight."

On Brighton: "They are a really good side. They played really well against us in the first game. We managed to stay in the game. There's going to be times where it's going to be like that tonight. But we want to impose ourselves as well. We were a better team than we were four months ago. We are expecting a tough game, but hope to give them a tough one as well."

Ruben Amorim needs to be given time at Man Utd - Nani

Four-time Premier League winner Nani, spoke to BBC Sport about Old Trafford's new Portuguese boss, Ruben Amorim.

Nani said: "He was always a calm guy. Very professional.

"He was very disciplined, and he finished his career very early. When he became a coach, I heard a lot about him with the small clubs doing so good.

"It was not a surprise when he arrived at Sporting, and he had so much success."

  12. 'Amorim wants his team to play on the front foot'published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Rene Meulensteen
Former Manchester United coach on BBC Radio 5 Live Drive

Ruben Amorim has obviously stepped in halfway through in the season which is always very, very difficult and I think he has drawn some conclusions over what has happened over the last few months.

He obviously got some good results against Liverpool and knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

However, in the last three home games, they all lost but on the back of those results I'm sure they've got more confidence now and they need to get into another phase. That's what he wants, he wants the team to start playing what is expected of United: play on the front foot, put people on the back foot, create chances and score a lot of goals so that is what he is looking for.

  13. 'Amorim has a job on his hands'published at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

You expect Man Utd to come away with a victory - it is so needed for Old Trafford.

Brighton head into the game on the back of an eight-game winless run in the Premier League, during which they have drawn six and lost two matches.

It is their longest such run since going 11 games without victory in 2021 under Graham Potter.

They have drawn against West Ham, Brentford, Aston Villa and Arsenal in their last four league matches, but defeated Norwich City 4-0 in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

  15. 'I am going with Brighton to win this'published at 19:00 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Chris Sutton predictions graphicImage source, BBC Sport

I really don't want to say I am loving what Ipswich are doing - but I am!

I mean, I would not move there or anything, but I am definitely becoming something of a fan of Kieran McKenna's side.

I love watching The Traitors on BBC iPlayer and I don't feel like I am being a traitor myself here, but my old club Norwich's past two attempts to stay in the Premier League have been pitiful. We were not quite as bad as Southampton this season, but we were not far off it.

In contrast, Ipswich are really giving it a go at staying up. They scrap for everything, but they have organisation and quality too and I am really enjoying Liam Delap's displays up front.

It goes without saying their home form has not been great but, after beating Bristol Rovers on Sunday they have now won their past two match at Portman Road, which will give them a bit more confidence for this game too.

I am still going with Brighton to win this though, and do the double in East Anglia this week.

The Seagulls put four goals past the Canaries at Carrow Road in the FA Cup at the weekend - I was right about that prediction even if it pained me to say it - and I have a feeling their eight-game winless run in the league ends here.

Brighton are going to find it harder against Ipswich - they drew with them at Amex Stadium in September - but they showed how good they can be against Arsenal last week, and their form is going to turn again soon.

    Prediction: 1-2

  16. 'It's going to be a tough match'published at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim, speaking to TNT Sports: "The feeling is a bit different, but we know for sure that it's going to be a tough match.

"At home, our fans expect more from us and that's extra pressure, but we are ready to face this team, and we are going to face the game in the right way.

"I want to see the same behavior when we don't have the ball and set-pieces, the small things. Then we have to be better with the ball.

"We will try to improve the last game and that's what we are going to do."

On Lenny Yoro replacing Harry Maguire: "Harry is tired and he had a tough week.

"I think Southampton will play without a striker and with more speed in front. Lenny is a quick player and he is a top talent.

"He is ready to cope with the demands of the game."

On Southampton: "In the stadium they don't have the pressure, the pressure is on our team, and we have to understand that."

Marcus Rashford's Manchester United future remains open to doubt.

The England forward has been linked with a number of clubs since his exile from United's first team began in the middle of last month.

The latest view is if Barcelona can find someone to sign Ansu Fati, they might be interested.

Rumours have also surfaced about Borussia Dortmund interest.

AC Milan have been mentioned but they are also keen on Kyle Walker and can only sign one under Italy's registration rules.

It feels very much like Rashford's future will not be decided until deadline day.

  18. Team news - Two changes for both sides, no Rashford in Man Utd squadpublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim makes two changes to the side who drew with Liverpool in their last league match.

Leny Yoro and Alejandro Garnacho come in for Harry Maguire and the suspended Diogo Dalot.

Amid much transfer speculation, Marcus Rashford is not in the Manchester United squad.

Manchester United XI: Onana, de Ligt, Yoro, Martinez, Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Garnacho, Diallo, Fernandes, Hojlund.

Subs: Bayindir, Maguire, Zirkzee, Malacia, Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony, Collyer, Kukonki.

    Man Utd line-up

There are also changes to the Southampton side who were heavily beaten by Brentford last time out.

Southampton XI: Ramsdale, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Sugawara, Bree, Ugochukwu, Aribo, Walker-Peters, Dibling, Onuachu, Sulemana.

Subs: McCarthy, Manning, Downes, Smallbone, Adam Armstrong, Lallana, Wood, Archer, Onuachu.

  19. Amorim borrows a Ferguson selection trickpublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January

Man Utd v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone at Old Trafford
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Ruben Amorim has played a trick straight out of the Sir Alex Ferguson play book.

Manchester United's head coach spoke extensively about Harry Maguire in the build-up to tonight's Premier League encounter with Southampton, about how the defender was a leader again and a key man in the centre of his back three.

Tonight, Maguire is on the bench.

It reminds me of the time, unprompted, Ferguson sang the praises of Quinton Fortune, who was not an obvious topic of discussion ahead of a key game.

It turned out Fortune had fractured his leg and Ferguson was both boosting an injured player's confidence while at the same time making it appear someone was going to be in his team who had no chance of being involved.
