This is why it helps to have the world's best goalkeeper. Emi Martinez has made two amazing saves now - remember his first one to spectacularly deny Michael Olise in the first - and he has played a big part in what could be an amazing night for Villa.

  6. Played nine, won eight for Slotpublished at 21:52 British Summer Time 2 October

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Anfield

Arne Slot’s first home Champions League match as Liverpool boss ended in victory as goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah saw the Reds defeat battling Italian side Bologna at Anfield.

Slot became the first man in Liverpool’s distinguished history to win eight of his first nine games in charge, but his side had to survive some nervous moments in this hard-fought clash.

The hosts scored in the 12th minute when Mac Allister was able to convert from close range following Mohamed Salah’s excellent low cross from the right side.

Both sides had potential goals ruled out for offside – Thijs Dallinga for Bologna and Darwin Nunez for Liverpool – before the Italians, in their first ever Champions League campaign and only their second time in European football’s top competition, ended the first half well.

Dan Ndoye hit the post and Bologna capitalised on an error in his own penalty area from Trent Alexander-Arnold, before Alisson saved to deny Kacper Urbanski.

The visitors continued to create chances after the break, with Alisson saving well from Riccardo Orsolini and Urbanski firing over when well placed.

But the hosts sealed the win in style with Salah’s 49th Champions League goal, cutting in on to his left and curling a wonderful shot into the top corner to ensure Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer, continued his fine start to his tenure.

I'm going to surprise you. Emiliano Martinez is fine and play restarts.

  8. 'You have to do more to open Villa up'published at 21:52 British Summer Time 2 October

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Thomas Hitzlsperger
Former Aston Villa midfielder on MOTD: Uefa Champions League

Bayern have got great quality in their pressing, but I can’t remember them having many good goalscoring opportunities until that Serge Gnabry save.

Winning the ball back against a team like Villa is not good enough, you have to do more than this to open them up.

You can hear more from Hitzlsperger on MOTD: Uefa Champions League at 22:40 BST on BBC One and the BBC Sport website and app.

  9. 'Excellent discipline from Villa in this second half'published at 21:51 British Summer Time 2 October

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Villa Park

The discipline that Aston Villa have played with in this second half has been excellent. They have really struggled to get up the pitch, they have sat in and Diego Carlos and Pau Torres have been rocks at the back, the full backs haven't moved either, staying in their positions.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

For all of Bayern's possession, that was Emi Martinez's first serious save - bar his early stop to deny Harry Kane when the striker was offside anyway. Villa's concentration levels at the back have been excellent.

  15. 'Carlos and Torres have marshalled Kane well'published at 21:49 British Summer Time 2 October

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Villa Park

Harry Kane has been very quiet in the second half. There's not a lot of space for him to work with in there. Diego Carlos and Pau Torres have marshalled him well, Ross Barkley and Youri Tielemans adding more cover just in front of them too.
