This will be Arne Slot’s first taste of a European night at Anfield since becoming the Reds manager in the summer – and it’s fair to say he can’t wait.

“There are clubs where you need to do good things before they support you, but here the stadium is on fire from the first second, like it was at Feyenoord,” said the Dutchman.

"I was privileged to work at Feyenoord last season where Champions League nights were special. People tell me it is going to be more special here, so I expect a lot when we play the first game. I'm definitely looking forward to my first experience of [Anfield] European nights.”

After playing in the Europa League last season, this will be six-time European champions Liverpool’s first home game in the Champions League since February 2023, when they lost 5-2 to Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds won the Champions League, lost in two finals, reached the quarter-finals on another two occasions and reached the final of the Europa League. Can Slot follow that and create his own special Anfield European nights?

There was standing room only on the train from Birmingham New Street to Witton three hours before kick-off this evening.

The streets around Villa Park were already packed too, the fans are ready for tonight.

Bayern and Villa fans were also mixing in town - alongside the obligatory sales of half and half scarves - and enjoying themselves.

Leaving Villa Park after Vincent Kompany's news conference at 21:00 BST last night, the PA system was playing the Champions League anthem as the club prepares for the return of top level European football to the stadium.

The dress rehearsal is over with the visit of the six-time champions.

Aston Villa's tussle with Bayern Munich tonight comes 42 years after their triumph against them in the 1982 final in Rotterdam.

A scruffy finish from striker Peter Withe won them the trophy and this BBC archive shows the players bringing it back to Birmingham.
