  1. 'It feels like home' - Kompany on Bayern reignpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany talking to TNT Sports: "It's my new home, so it feels like home. This does feel familiar, and it's not a long time since I've been here, but in the end, it's about the great football night that's ahead, traditional club in the Champions League, two of them in reality, and hopefully a great night."

On mindset of players: "I think we have an attacking threat, that's for sure, but as we've seen, when you play against teams that can be compact and defending well, I think for any team in the world, you've got to make the most of your chances but I think the club is very ambitious, the players always approach every game to win so that's the mindset today and hopefully we'll see the best of us."

On Kane's fitness: "As a coach, you're always a little bit anxious about these moments, but no, he's robust, he's experienced, he gave us a thumbs up, so he's ready for the game and he'll be just as motivated as I am."

  2. 'Injury has given me time to reflect'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings speaking to TNT Sports: "I think this injury has given me a good time to reflect on where the club was, where my career was when I first joined, I mean I wasn't playing at Bournemouth, and then I came here and my career and the club have gone [up] together. To see where the club are now, to see that they're playing in the Champions League and stuff, and to come back and be part of it, I think will be very special.

"At the same time, it doesn't feel like the end, it doesn't feel like we've got it now, we're just going to enjoy a season and try and enjoy it whilst we're here, the manager has got big plans and so have we."

  4. Six years since fan threw cabbage at Brucepublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Steve Bruce

Today is a special day for Aston Villa.

Yes it is their first Champions League home game - but also the six-year anniversary of a supporter throwing a cabbage at under-pressure boss Steve Bruce.

It's fair to say they have come a long way since then.

On 2 October 2018 Glenn Whelan missed a 97th-minute penalty in their 3-3 Championship draw with Preston - with the club sitting 12th.

"Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in at the moment. There's no respect for anyone," Bruce said.

"I find the whole thing hugely disrespectful."

Bruce was sacked the next day.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says the club's first Champions League home game against Bayern Munich will be a "special" occasion.

Villa opened their campaign with a 3-0 win away at Young Boys in Switzerland and will play their first home fixture in Europe's elite competition since 1983.

German giants Bayern travel to Villa Park for a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final, which Villa famously won.

"We are motivated and so excited to play with our supporters in Villa Park. It is a special, special match for everyone," Emery said.

Emery, who has taken charge of 188 games in European football, has beaten Bayern in the Champions League as manager of Paris St-Germain and Villarreal.

He said his side are underdogs to the six-time European Cup winners but urged his players to "compete" and "show their best".

"I think Europe is something very, very important and very, very difficult. This is the challenge we have now," Emery added.

"Of course it's against one of the best teams in the world. They are favourites, much bigger favourites than us."

    Liverpool v Bologna (20:00 BST)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on Sportsday

Not many people know a lot about Bologna.

I think they were a big surprise in Serie A last season but they managed with Thiago Motta, the manager, who ended up going to Juventus because he did such a good job, you're talking about the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, as well, who we see now at Manchester United, they got them to that promised land, to the Champions League.

I think going to Anfield is pretty much an acid test, doing it for the first time, but they will pose a throat because they are very deserving of their opportunity.

Bologna are currently 13th in Serie A and marked their first appearance in Europe’s elite competition since 1964 with a goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.

"Last season was amazing for us, since a long time, not participating in the Champions League so it's like a dream for our city, our fans, our club and we are really happy to be here, play these kind of games, hopefully it will be a very good game."

On what will be his first European home game in charge of the Reds, Slot said: "I was privileged to work at Feyenoord last season where Champions League nights were special. People tell me it is going to be more special here.

"What I want from the players is them to show they missed this. I want to see this, I want to feel this.

"I am hoping it's the same from our fans. I hope they feel this desire to show Europe that you missed us.

"That combination should lead to hopefully a special night for everyone involved with Liverpool."

Going to be listening on 5 Live tonight from Hondarribia in Spain, the birthplace of Emery. I’ve recently moved here to teach English and I was explaining to the kids here how incredibly grateful I am as a Villa fan for all that Emery has done for the club. I’d given up on the idea that Villa would ever qualify for CL again. What a night. UTV!
