Offside so it wouldn't have counted but Harry Kane's bullet header is well saved by the left foot of Emiliano Martinez.

Arne Slot, having his first taste of a Champions League night at Anfield as Liverpool coach, is right on the edge of his technical area orchestrating his players.

The hosts have made a strong start, Bologna have barely had a touch of the ball after six minutes.

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on TNT Sports

It's a brilliant night for Philogene. He'll be up and down with his fair share of defending, but when Aston Villa do have it, you can see he's high.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Bayern Munich

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Villa Park

The early stages have panned out as I would have thought with Bayern Munich controlling possession. Villa are being patient.

First chance is Bayern's. They work the ball to Joshua Kimmich, whose effort from outside the box is saved by Emiliano Martinez.

    Lille 0-0 Real Madrid

A 17th birthday to remember for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi who is the joint-youngest player to make a Champions League appearance on his own birthday, alongside PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery (17) on 8 March 2023.

  7. Gravenberch a man in formpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 2 October

    Liverpool 0-0 Bologna

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Anfield

Ryan Gravenberch is a man in form and nearly sets up a goal in the opening 90 seconds, linking up with Mohamed Salah, with Gravenberch's low cross just avoiding Darwin Nunez in the middle.

Gravenberch only started 12 Premier League games under Jurgen Klopp, but has been a massive part of Liverpool's fine start to this season.

The Dutch midfielder put in a man-of-the-match performance against AC Milan, earning a place in Uefa's team of the opening round of fixtures and then also shone in the 2-1 win at Wolves at the weekend.

Villa tickets for this game sold out in club record time for a cup game - despite the criticism surrounding their pricing of Champions League games.

Villa were labelled "out of touch" by their own Supporters' Trust but it has not stopped fans packing Villa Park this evening.

Adult tickets for their four home matches in the new 36-team league format will be £85, £94 and £97, while season-ticket holders get discounted rates of £70, £79 and £82.

    Liverpool 0-0 Bologna

    Steve McManaman
Former Liverpool winger on TNT Sports

It's great to have the Champions League back at Anfield. It's nice to see they've got a real strong side out

It's important in this format to get another three points.

Early danger for Bologna as Ryan Gravenberch turns and bursts through the middle of the park. He exchanges passes with Mohamed Salah before playing a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Luis Diaz can't turn in.

  13. Can Bologna spoil Slot's first Anfield European night?published at 19:59 British Summer Time 2 October

    Liverpool v Bologna (20:00 BST)

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Anfield

A rousing atmosphere as expected at Anfield. Liverpool have already beaten one Italian team in this competition, winning 3-1 at AC Milan, while Bologna started with a 0-0 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Champions League anthem was first booed, and then attempted to be drowned out by the home fans. This is one of the biggest games in Bologna's recent history so can they spoil Arne Slot's first European Anfield night?

  14. 'He wants a trophy' - Young on Emerypublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Ashley Young
Former Aston Villa winger on TNT Sports

When he came to the club, he saw the club, the position we were in, and he knew what he wanted to do, he knew that he wanted to project the club back to where he believes the club could be, where the owners believed the club could be and that's back in European football.

I do actually believe Unai Emery thought he could get the club to Champions League football and he's managed to do that and he's not going to sit there and be happy with just doing that. He wants to bring a trophy back to this club, whether it be Champions League, whether it'd be just the trophy, he wants to do that, he's a man that... he wants success, he's had success and that's what he wants to do.

The contract situation with Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold has to be resolved. I'm sure all three of them want to know what is going to happen with the club moving forwards, unless they have already made their decisions.

I think Mo Salah is going to leave, it looks like it. Trent I would like to see stay, it is difficult to replace his quality but you can find it, but the personality of someone who has been at the club for so long is hard to replace. Van Dijk I would like to see him stay there too.

  16. 'Emery is top class'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings speaking to TNT Sports: "We're in and amongst it. The manager is absolutely top class. We've always been, from when the manager came in, we were trying to get to Europe, we were trying to get to the Champions League, we were trying to combine European football with Premier League football and the schedule, which is new to a lot of us, I mean, I still haven't done it, but those guys have!

"It's so positive, it's so positive and it's a dressing room full of belief bearing in mind there a lot of new faces that are going into the Champions League, playing in the Champions League for the first time but the manager is an experienced European campaigner and he's been there, he's done it, he's won the Europa League many many times so that gives us a belief.

"The performances, they've been very consistent for a long period of time, so in these games, you probably have to find a more consistently high level, but in terms of what they've been delivering week in week out, they've been playing to such a high level for a long time anyway."

  17. 'Bologna happy to make the most of Champions League'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Thomas Hitzlsperger
Former Aston Villa midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Bologna have done incredibly well over the last few years, but they are probably ahead of their plan a little bit. They have lost two of their key players to Premier League sides, so now I think they are happy to be in the Champions League and making the most of it.

  18. Philogene gets his chance for Villapublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

A big day for Jaden Philogene, who makes his second start for Aston Villa - over three years after his first.

The 22-year-old winger came through Villa's academy and played six times - including an EFL Cup start against Barrow in 2021 - before joining Hull City in the summer of 2023.

He scored 12 goals in 32 games for Hull last season - and Villa signed him back for £18m - although in real terms £13.5m because of a 30% sell-on clause.

Philogene has come off the bench three times for Villa this season - and gets his chance today from the start.

  19. 'Musiala omission a surprise'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm really not sure at all why Jamal Musiala is only on the bench for Bayern. They have gone for a three of Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry and Michael Olise behind Harry Kane, so perhaps Vincent Kompany has seen something in the way that Asto Villa defend and thinks that is the way to attack them?

Musiala is a star, he is so important for how they dominate the ball and how they play out from the back. His omission is definitely a surprise.

  20. 'A difficult one to call'published at 19:55 British Summer Time 2 October

Aston Villa v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The last and only time these two great clubs faced each other was in the 1982 final, Aston Villa's greatest night and boy would they love a repeat of that this evening.

I think it is a fascinating game. Vincent Kompany returning to these shores with Bayern Munich, who have made a flying start to the season. Unai Emery's teams are always so well coached and organised. I think it is a really difficult one to call.

Looking at the Bayern Munich bench, they have an array of stars at their disposal, and the first eleven is so strong, so Villa will have their work cut out for them tonight.

Unai Emery's side have taken big scalps in the past, although they will have to play well to do that.
