From a player's perspective you have to remove the emotion from the occasion. For the staff and the fans, they have to enjoy this moment. The players will enjoy it, but they will enjoy it more when they win.

This is a battle that Nuno will lose. We all know that once you start questioning your owner, it's done. For him to come out with this unprompted, he offered it to the whole world, he knows that it is coming and that he can't win this battle.

We also know that him and Edu don't get on. He was already there when Edu arrived at the club, and we all know when a new sporting director arrives they like to come with their own people.

I can't see a better man in the dugout now for Everton than David Moyes, in terms of removing the emotion from the game.

It was an interesting transition choice from the Friedkin Group to bring Moyes in because it completely went away from where I thought the club was going to go with this new phase.

I thought they would go with a new, young manager, a Fabian Hurzeler type, but Moyes did so well to keep them in the league last season and bring some stability.

I think Carlos Baleba is probably very happy to play another season at Brighton with Fabian Hurzeler. He is still only 21 years old and remember he had hardly played for Lille in Ligue 1 when he moved here to the Premier League.

Maybe now he is not ready just yet, he might be talent wise but maybe not personality, to move onto the likes of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool those type of big clubs.

  6. How do teams fare at new stadiums?published at 13:52 British Summer Time 24 August

    Everton v Brighton (14:00 BST)

Everton are the ninth Premier League club to move to a new stadium so how did the other eight fare during their first season?

    • Tottenham (2019) - League position: Sixth, home league games win rate: 63%
    • West Ham (2016) - League position: 11th, home league games win rate: 37%
    • Arsenal (2006) - League position: Fourth, home league games win rate: 63%
    • Man City (2003) - League position: 16th, home league games win rate: 26%
    • Southampton (2001) - League position: 11th, home league games win rate: 37%
    • Derby (1997) - League position: Ninth, home league games win rate: 63%
    • Bolton (1997) - League position: 18th (relegated), home league games win rate: 37%
    • Middlesbrough (1995) - League position: 12th, home league games win rate: 42%

There are so many talking points off the field. Whether it's manager rows with the owner, players leaving, and from a game perspective it is pretty exciting. There is that extra spice.

These two teams have been brilliant in recent years and fans have enjoyed what they have been watching, but the off field stuff has certainly taken the headlines.

"Evangelos Marinakis: Blind Trust. Uefa: Just Blind," reads one.

The Everton players will want to start well here, especially after what happened against Leeds last week. It is a beautiful day, the stadium is perfect and yet the pressure is so big on you. Everyone remembers the first game at a new stadium. Imagine if you are not at the level you should be at to honour the move from the historic Goodison Park to here?

Goodison Park was like a cauldron of noise, so with 20,000 plus more fans in the new place, and the stands as steep as they are, the noise is going to be similar to that of a German football stadium. I can only imagine when the players walk out of the tunnel come kick off time, the place is going to erupt. For the players it is about using it.

What odds can you get for Forest to sack Nuno and replace him with Glasner? Given there is already bad blood between these clubs - could you imagine the emnity between Palace and Forest if this happened?! The thing is - I could see Glasner doing well there…

Quite surprisingly, Palace have never won in 10 previous Premier League meetings with Forest. They would love to break that duck today.

They also have to snap a poor record in their first home games of Premier League seasons - they have won only one of their last 16 opening top-flight fixtures at Selhurst Park, losing 12.

    Nedum Onuoha

With Edu coming into the club in such an important position, he will want his own people in play, because they will never really fully trust the person that is already in play. If he could pick a manager now, would he pick Nuno? No.

That will be nagging for as long as possible, but Marinakis and Edu won't be routing for him to fail so they can make the change. But the relationship is broken and I would not be surprised if Nuno walks before he is sacked.

The burning question has to be, if Evangelos Marinakis sacks Nuno, who would be a suitable replacement and more importantly, who would be available this early in the season ?

Everton boss David Moyes, speaking to PLP: "It is incredibly special. It is a moment of history.

"I keep using the phrase, in 100 years' time there will be other people doing it. We are fortunate to come here on the first day. A huge thank you to the people who have made it possible.

"We wouldn't be standing here if it wasn't for them.

"I feel good and ready to go. A bit concerned that we're a bit short of defenders at the moment.

"It is a new era at the club, and I'm going to go into it positive.

On Jack Grealish starting: "I made the changes because we have not scored enough goals. As far as Grealish goes, everyone knows Jack Grealish.

"It might be a bit soon for him as well."

Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest (14:00 BST)

    Emma Smith
    BBC Sport at Selhurst Park

There is talk of protests from the Crystal Palace fans against the Court of Arbitration for Sport today, following the failure of the club's appeal against their demotion from the Europa League.

Palace fans have been speaking to the BBC's Aaron Paul outside Selhurst Park, and there are varying views on the protests

"The decision has been made, so we might as well get on with it now," says Nigel. "If we win the Conference League, we will be in the Europa next season anyway."

But Rob is in favour of protests, especially against Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis. It was Marinakis who wrote to Uefa to question Palace's place in the competition - and he could be at the ground today.

"It's not the Forest fans, it is their leadership," says Rob. "Marinakis is the snidey one, he has grassed us up like a little kid at school. But we carry on, we always do.

"There should be protests. Palace fans have always had a voice, a decent moral view, we will say the right thing today and we will say it loud and proud."

Quite why Nuno has decided to press the self destruct button I don't know. He has changed his reason for being upset in the last week also, so it looks like he is determined to engineer an exit.

    Martin, Nottingham

I don’t see how Nuno can stay after the comments. Real shame as well, he has got them purring, but some bridges can’t be rebuilt.

Sympathy for Palace's plight was in short supply from Forest fan Phil, who spoke to the BBC's Aaron Paul after making a four hour trip from Doncaster to south London for today's game.

"A lot of the needle is to do with Steve Parish, saying it is all our fault. But they knew the rules, that is nothing to do with us," he said.

"The media have been saying it is all our fault, it wasn't.

"There will be needle, but we know what to expect."

Palace will always be a selling club until the finances within football are changed. They have sold Olise to Munich and Eze and Guehi gone/going. That's a lot of money coming into the club and I see no real improvements in the stadium so the money must be going on the players/agents - that's not sustainable for Palace nor in a wider context for football generally...
