  1. Konate trains with Liverpool squadpublished at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool have been out on the grass at the AXA Training Centre, where defender Ibrahima Konate joined the squad before Tuesday's Champions League tie at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

The Frenchman was an injury doubt after being replaced by Joe Gomez at half-time on Saturday.

Sorry for those of you who were waiting to watch Liverpool train, we had some technical issues. Don't worry though, you didn't miss much as the Reds squad jumped over a few plastic hurdles and threw some medicine balls to each other. They all had a smile on their faces too, if you were wondering!

10 games in and Liverpool/Man City starting to create a gap is ominous for a wider title race, but 3rd-10th being only separated by 4 points should make the race for European places much more interesting. Those teams could all be reversed by the international break.

  3. Liverpool still without injured fourpublished at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool are still without Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott until after the international break.

Elliott, though, has been spotted doing some individual training as he recovers from a broken foot.

  4. 'Bournemouth should fear no-one'published at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Danny: Hi Phil. As a Bournemouth fan I'm still on cloud nine after Saturday's result against Man City. However I do feel too much has been made of City's 'injuries' and not enough credit given to us for what was a thoroughly deserved victory. If you look at City's starting 11 and subs bench, it was still stacked with talent. Do you think it's far too easy for a lot of people to look for excuses for City, instead of just acknowledging Bournemouth outplayed them on the day?

Hello, Danny. I had this same question after Bournemouth beat Arsenal. I actually do think Bournemouth get credit for what they do but the problem is the headline news is always going to be a very, very rare Manchester City defeat.

You can console yourself by rightly being on cloud nine supporting a team that is now an established Premier League force who should fear no-one, led by an outstanding manager in Andoni Iraola.

Former West Ham manager on the Football Daily podcast

I think the new manager needs time. They [West Ham] look more open than they have done before but trying to score more goals as well. I just think the manager needs to be given an opportunity to settle things down. Sometimes the players need to step up and perform as well.

  6. 'It does not look like there has been much buy-in to Lopetegui's methods'published at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Curley: Morning Phil. I would like your views please on West Ham’s struggles. Whilst in my opinion Moyes needed replacing, the answer to the issue was not Lopetegui. We are lucky to have the meagre amount of points we have & there appears no light at the end of the tunnel.

The squad has lost its identity, the players appear not to want to play for the manager. Three red cards already this season shows the complete lack of discipline needed when you are a struggling team. The summer buys are very questionable & we now have the oldest squad in the league. No dynamism, no spirit & no idea!

Morning, Curley. I’ve been really surprised at how poor West Ham been given their spending in the summer. They just don’t look right under Lopetegui and the heavy loss at Nottingham Forest was another blow.

I agree the David Moyes era had run its natural course and he should never be forgotten for bringing the Europa Conference League to the club – but what surprised me was the idea Lopetgui would then be taking West Ham and their supporters on some sort of all-out attacking thrill ride.

Lopetegui’s teams have never been like that. He is a pragmatic coach, albeit a very good one.

The problem is that it does not look like there has been much buy-in to his methods from West Ham’s players so far.

West Ham’s owners are not trigger happy when it comes to managers. They like to give them time – but Lopetegui certainly needs a result at home to struggling Everton this weekend.

It was huge because to have two home defeats at Liverpool is not something they get too often. It's always been so difficult to get a result at Anfield. Arne Slot has been great. Following Jurgen is a bit like following Sir Alex. They showed some resilience coming back against Brighton.

Liverpool are toppermost of the poppermost (as the Beatles used to say)! They need to sort Mo Salah's contract out ASAP though (and Trent and Virg) to stop any doubt creeping in as the season unfolds. I said that would happen, with Klopp leaving, and I was right. Salah is one of the top three in the world imo and those guys have plenty in the tank in their thirties. The Slot machine keeps paying out. Loving it.

  10. 'Contract talks will not be a distraction on the pitch'published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Anon: Hi Phil. Can Liverpool win the Premier League? They are winning even without playing well. Big games this week vs Leverkusen & Villa at home & after international break vs City. Will the trio of contract talks become a help or hindrance?

Absolutely Liverpool can. One look at the Premier League table, their results, and the quality in their squad tell you that it is a possibility. Early days yet, though.

I don’t think the contract talks - such as they may or may not be - with Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be a distraction on the pitch. I think they are too professional for that and it has certainly not touched their performances so far this season.

Liverpool’s fans are clearly concerned, understandably, but I do not think it will have any impact on results or performances.

  11. 'Amorim must give the team an actual identity'published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

@CouncilRonaldo on X: What do Manchester United need to change to challenge again?

Well, they have started the process by replacing Erik ten Haag with Ruben Amorim.

They need to get away from the appalling recruitment of recent years to find better players at better value. Amorim must also give the team an actual identity and greater goal threat.

United's players must also be coached better to see if there is actually more to the current squad than has met the eye so far.

    Other than that...

  12. Konate injury 'isn't serious'published at 11:41 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Liverpool

Good news for Liverpool as defender Ibrahima Konate confirms he isn't injured after coming off at half-time in the 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday.

“Thanks for all the messages of support. My injury isn’t serious thankfully,” Konate posted on his Instagram account.

“I had a scan today and it confirmed there is no break. I’ll be ready for the next game.”

It will be interesting to see if Konate takes part in Liverpool training today, before Tuesday's Champions League tie at home to German champions Bayer Leverkusen.

  13. Should goalkeepers falling to the ground be booked?published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

KLF: Phil, what’s your view on goalkeepers catching an easy ball and then falling to the ground to time waste. It's embarrassing! Can it be deemed time wasting and a yellow card offence?

I do think it is irritating and an obvious attempt at time wasting. I remember a time when keepers had a certain amount of time – four seconds if I recall correctly – to get rid of the ball. I’m not sure if this is still in force but I am totally in favour of that.

  14. 'I wouldn't be here if I knew' - Mourinho pans refereespublished at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Media caption,

Fenerbache boss Jose Mourinho thinks the Turkish League stinks and referee's are scared.

Jose Mourinho condemned refereeing standards in Turkey after his Fenerbahce side scored a 102nd-minute winner to cap a dramatic game against Trabzonspor.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager sprinted on to the pitch and attempted a knee slide as Sofyan Amrabat's late goal in stoppage time earned a 3-2 victory on Sunday.

However, Mourinho was unhappy with home team Trabzonspor being awarded two penalties - both after video assistant referee (VAR) consultations - and thought his side should have had a spot-kick before Amrabat's late winner.

The 61-year-old even questioned why he had come to Turkey.

Speaking at length to broadcaster beIN Sports, Mourinho criticised the performance of referee Oguzhan Cakir and VAR official Atilla Karaoglan.

"I blame the Fenerbahce people that brought me here," said Mourinho, who took over at the club in June. "They told me only half of the truth.

"They didn't tell me the whole truth because if they told me the whole truth, I wouldn't come.

"But, with half of the truth and my boys, we fight opponents and the system."

And 6 - as a Redman...I'll be happy for the lads to stay where they are today.

  16. Can Arsenal recover?published at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

Over the past seven seasons, the Premier League champions have dropped an average of 20 points during the course of their title-winning campaigns.

Arsenal have already dropped 12, having surrendered 25 when they finished two points behind Man City in May.

Mikel Arteta, whose side went unbeaten and dropped just six points in their first 10 games last term, said: "After eight, nine or 10 games last year we didn't [talk about points] and we won't talk about it now.

"It's about how you react to that. We're not going to find the right words or answers to describe how we feel. We have to put it on that field on Wednesday night against Inter [Milan in the Champions League].

"It's not about the hope of winning the title, it's about being our best selves every single week. Today we weren't our best version."

  17. 'Far too early to say Arsenal are in crisis'published at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Reeza: Hi Phil. Are Arsenal really in a crisis? It's been 10 games but they've played Spurs, City, Villa and Newcastle away and Liverpool at home, losing only to Newcastle. Surely it's just a blip?

Morning, Reeza. Think you’ve forgotten they lost at Bournemouth as well.

Far too early to say Arsenal are in crisis, but it has undoubtedly been a tough couple of weeks with those losses at Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

I do agree with you that they have had a pretty tough opening sequence of fixtures and will be on the up again once Martin Odegaard returns. I am certainly not writing them off, although Manchester City’s loss at Bournmouth will have been a relief because an eight-point gap would have been difficult.

My main question about Arsenal is that lack of a regular 20-goals-a-season striker. I wonder if, as the season goes on, manager Mikel Arteta will not regret addressing that in the summer.

But crisis? Think they are a fair way from that.

  19. 'Who else would want the Everton job at the present moment?'published at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Matt: What will it take for Everton to get rid of Dyche this season?

Not really keen on outlining what it will take for someone to lose their job, Matt, but I think the same rules apply to Sean Dyche as any other manager. He must improve results and ensure Everton do not drop even further into trouble than they already are.

In an additional point, who else would actually want the Everton job at the present moment with a new owner in Dan Friedkin possibly only weeks away and who will, in all likelihood, want a manager of his own?

I think, barring the prospect of a relegation calamity, he will be in charge until the end of the season, when I believe Friedkin will bring in his own choice.

  20. 'I do not see Dyche as manager beyond the end of this season'published at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

@win_n10 on X: Sean Dyche has never commanded critical acclaim for his no-nonsense post-war austerity football but Evertonians find themselves asking if his wretched anti-football has finally hit the buffers. Can he turn it around or is he a dead man walking?

I get the real sense of discontent from Everton fans, not just about results but the style of football under Sean Dyche.

I fear ambition will be limited to staying up this season as relegation ahead of going into that magnificent new stadium is unthinkable. This is why, unless Everton are plunged into a dire emergency, I think Dyche will stay in charge as he has charted a course to safety before.

I do not see him taking Everton into Bramley Moore Dock as history tells us billionaires such as prospective new owner Dan Friedkin want their own manager in charge and will harbour wider ambitions than simply safety.

I do not see Dyche, who deserves respect for ensuring Everton’s safety in the last couple of seasons, as manager beyond the end of this season.
