Nottingham Forest are certainly this season's surprise package in the Premier League, sitting third after 10 games on 19 points - making them nine points better off than last season.

Incredibly, Forest are already more than half-way to the total of 32 points they hit last term.

Should Spurs be in the title discussion?published at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Ben: Hi Phil, Spurs are two points behind Arsenal. If Arsenal are still in the title discussion, should Spurs be in that discussion too?

Hello, Ben. You’re right. Just two points behind constitutes Spurs currently being in the same bracket as Arsenal and if you could guarantee they played like they did yesterday against Aston Villa every week, then why not?

I need more convincing about Spurs’ consistency but they are a very talented and highly-entertaining team under Ange Postecoglou.

I think Spurs are a better bet for a cup this season whereas I can see Arsenal improving in the Premier League once Martin Odegaard is back. They have had some really tough fixtures.

I do feel more and more, though, that this could be a very unpredictable Premier League season compared to others in the recent past when Manchester City’s triumph has nearly always felt inevitable.

  4. 'A platform has been established for a top-10 finish'published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Jeremy: Hi Phil. I don't think anybody would have thought that a quarter of the way into the season Nottingham Forest would be in third place! While the realist in me knows that it is incredibly unlikely that they will still be there come May, where do you think Forest could realistically finish this season?

Morning, Jeremy. You’re right. I don’t think anyone – maybe even not Nuno – expected Nottingham Forest to be third at this stage of the season but their position is fully deserved. It was another fine win against West Ham United in one of those great City Ground atmospheres.

Nuno has a team exactly how he likes it. They are strong in defence, have pace and width and a goalscorer in Chris Wood who is going through one of the golden spells of his career.

I think it is a stretch to suggest Forest will be in the top six over the course of the whole season but a platform has been established for a top-10 finish, which I think any of their supporters would have snatched at before the start of the season.

I have, however, always thought there would be a bit more flux and instability about this Premier League than normal so who knows? What a start, though.

Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Chelsea went there not knowing what to expect from Manchester United and maybe they took too long to start playing and doing what they have been doing better in the last few weeks.

It was a competitive game, it wasn't easy. After the goal they reacted very well and got the equaliser.

It wasn't one of their best performances but going to Man United in their situation right now, they will not be happy but they were satisfied.

Remember when Chelsea were condemned for paying £115m to Brighton for Moises Caicedo?

The Ecuador midfielder was outstanding at Old Trafford yesterday, and added goalscoring to his repertoire with a well-taken effort to ensure the trip to Manchester United ended in a draw.

I asked Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca afterwards why Caicedo now seems to have settled in at Stamford Bridge and is delivering performances reminiscent of his Brighton days.

"Most of the time in football one plus one is not two," he said.

"Just because he was sold for big money at Brighton it doesn't mean when he is at Chelsea he is going to be as good as he was there.

"Players are human beings and need time to adapt.

"Chelsea is one of the biggest club in the world and it is not automatic but now he is showing how good he was."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was speaking to BBC Match of the Day after Sunday's draw with Manchester United.

"We had to prepare for the game in a different way but we tried to win until the end. I was quite clear in wanting to try something tactically."

Can we move on from talking about Manchester United? It's boring and tedious. It's the same analysis and comments for about 10 years. The players aren't good enough, the league is better. Let's move on, there's far more interesting teams in the league.

OK Matthew, how about Chelsea? We will be hearing from manager Enzo Maresca next...

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag might have had legitimate complaints about West Ham's injury-time penalty at the London Stadium last week that ended up costing him his job, but Old Trafford was noticeably quiet around Lisandro Martinez's second-half tackle on Cole Palmer.

Martinez was booked for the challenge, which caught Palmer on the knee.

Ruud van Nistelrooy said it was OK in real time. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca did not share that opinion.

"It is quite clear almost for all of us but the referee took a different decision," he said.

"When there is no intention to go for the ball, and go for legs, I think it is quite clear it is a red."

My situation was completely different. The greatest-ever manager had just left the club, the group of players loved Sir Alex. This group of players have had the manager sacked so they may be happy. He's [Ruben Amorim] coming into an unbelievable football club and he'll be given every opportunity to put it right.

  13. 'Amorim’s obvious top priority is to unlock United's goalscoring potential'published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Man Utd 1-1 Chelsea

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent

This time next week Ruben Amorim will be settling into his new surroundings. And while his short term attention will be focused on Sporting’s Champions League match against Manchester City tomorrow, which has now taken on an extra significance, the issue that will be at the top of his agenda when he arrives at United is all too clear.

Only nine goals scored after the first 10 league matches of the season; United’s poorest return at this stage of a campaign for over half a century.

And yet United’s front four look like they should be packed with goalscoring potential. In fact, in the Premier League, Alejandro Garnacho has two goals while Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have precisely one each, as does young back-up forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Amorim’s abundantly obvious top priority as the new Manchester United head coach is to unlock the goalscoring potential that group surely has within them.

  14. Sobering stats facing Amorimpublished at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Man Utd 1-1 Chelsea

Ruben Amorim will have no shortage of data to mull over, if he is under any illusion as to the task facing him when he takes the reins at Manchester United.

Here are a handful of the more sobering statistics of United's season so far:

    • United are currently 13th in the table with 12 points, their worst return after 10 games of a league campaign since 1986-87, when they had eight. That was the season the torch passed from Ron Atkinson to Sir Alex Ferguson.
    • The side's lack of punch is underscored by their meagre total of nine league goals, their fewest in a league campaign since 1973-74, when they also had nine. That was the season they were relegated to the former Second Division.
    • Attacking trio Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford have scored only four league goals between them this season. The expected goals against Chelsea was 0.4 for Garnacho, 0.2 for Rashford and 0.0 for Hojlund, a reflection of their performances so far this season.
    • Hojlund has a shot conversion rate of 25% from four shots in the Premier League this season. Rashford’s ratio is 10% from 10 shots while Garnacho is 6.9% from 29 shots – including blocks.
    • United have scored only two first-half goals in the league this season, the joint fewest along with Crystal Palace, all figures that hint at the weaknesses Amorin must correct.
  15. 'No creation & millions wasted on recruitment - Amorim's mammoth task'published at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Man Utd 1-1 Chelsea

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Old Trafford

If Ruben Amorim spent his Sunday in Lisbon tuning into events at Old Trafford, he will have witnessed a graphic illustration of the task awaiting him when he finally arrives as Manchester United manager.

United, under the temporary leadership of Ruud van Nistelrooy following Erik ten Hag’s sacking, were not short of effort in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but this grim evidence of an acute lack of quality and creation, bolted on to the vast millions wasted on poor recruitment, will have been a sobering experience for Amorim.

If he did not know the industrial scale of the job he has taken on, then Amorim will no longer be under any illusions.

This was not a bad United display, certainly not their worst in recent times, but all the perspiration expended could not cover up the shortage of inspiration that will be at his disposal.

Van Nistelrooy's desire to stay and help Utd is admirable, but it would be better if the slate is wiped clean and Amorim brings in his own team.

I personally cannot see Amorim keeping Van Nistelrooy at the club. It's someone with too much history at the club. If you're a club down at the bottom of the Premier League, you wouldn't mind taking a risk on Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Manchester United interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy spoke to BBC Match of the Day about what has been an eventful past week at Old Trafford.

  20. 'Postecoglou's way of doing things made me enjoy football more'published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

    Joe Hart
Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

How he spoke before a game, how he set his team up, how he set us up as humans was what struck me.

Not as footballers but as people, how we should emotionally address the game.

Game day comes and his little tweaks at half-time were the best I've been a part of personally. Then, his post-match analysis really broke the game down. Really simple - you go in with a really clear thought process of what is being asked of you. It's not a lot but it's detailed and it needs to be done well. If it's done well you win the game.

He's not perfect but he worked out in-game how he wanted you to work. I just loved the clarity that he bought.

He's very clear with how he wants to play in the 4-3-3, that isn't changing.

You can't win every game but I now realise from that experience that his way of doing things where if we do it well we're going to win is what made me enjoy my football more.
