One story dominates the back pages of today's national newspapers.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes said after Sunday's draw at home to Chelsea that he spoke to sacked manager Erik ten Hag and apologised for not doing more to stop him losing his job.

The Dutchman was dismissed on Monday following United's 2-1 defeat at West Ham, which left them 14th in the table.

And the Portuguese midfielder said the players needed to take some of the responsibility.

"It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes," he told Sky Sports, after scoring from the spot to register his first Premier League goal of the this season in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

"You have to take some of the blame on yourself because it is the team that is not doing so well and it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.

"I spoke to the manager and apologised. We are not scoring goals and I feel responsible. I normally score a lot of goals but I always give 100% and he is aware of that."

Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy stressed again last night his desire to continue as assistant manager once new boss Ruben Amorim completes his move from Sporting in a week's time.

Van Nistelrooy has delivered a victory and a draw in his two games in charge so far and now has a Europa League game against Greek side PAOK on Thursday before completing his stint against Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday.

So far there has been no clarity over Van Nistelrooy's position, although Amorim said on Friday he intends to bring a coaching team with him to Old Trafford.

"I haven’t spoken to him and at this moment there is nothing planned," said Van Nistelrooy after his side's draw with Chelsea.

"I am doing my job to prepare for Thursday and Sunday."

Moises Caicedo’s crisp volley gave Chelsea a deserved point against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United’s interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, in charge while the Red Devils await the arrival of newly-appointed Ruben Amorim, looked on course for a second successive victory when Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock from the spot in the 70th minute after Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez brought down Rasmus Hojlund.

Van Nistelrooy celebrated wildly on the touchline but United’s elation lasted only four minutes until Caicedo expertly struck a superb shot past Andre Onana from the edge of the area.

It resulted in a share of the points in a largely unspectacular encounter, although Wesley Fofana hit the woodwork with a header in the first half, with United striker Marcus Rashford also volleying against the angle of post and bar before the break.

  7. Spurs come from behind to hit Villa for fourpublished at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November

    Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

Dominic Solanke scored twice as Tottenham came from behind to beat Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The £65m summer signing doubled his league goal tally for the season with two goals in four second-half minutes as Ange Postecoglou's side climbed to seventh in the table.

Solanke put Spurs ahead with a delightful first by lifting the ball over the onrushing Emiliano Martinez from Dejan Kulusevski's pass, before Richarlison picked out his team-mate to slot in and put a late fightback beyond Villa.

Morgan Rogers had given Villa the lead with the game's first shot on target after 32 minutes, profiting after Spurs failed to deal with Lucas Digne's in-swinging corner.

But Spurs were level within four minutes of the restart when Brennan Johnson met Son Heung-min's excellent cross from the left.

After Solanke's double, substitute James Maddison added a fourth with a wonderful free-kick deep in stoppage time.
