Mistake at the near post to concede the corner and Brentford are already one down. What a great goal from Wood though. How many of those do we see skied over the bar. In answer to the question, Yes he can still do it.

Are we watching prime Barcelona or Nottingham Forest here?

Morgan Gibbs-White spreads the ball out wide and then receives it in the box after a stunning flick from Elliot Anderson. He then gets it back but his powerful strike is charged down.

A half chance for the visitors as a free-kick from deep on the left is played into the box and Chris Richards heads it into the danger zone but Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez springs forwards to gather the ball before Daniel Munoz could put it into the back of the net.

It is a brilliant start for Forest. Some people doubted if Wood would reach the heights of last season and I'm not sure he has enjoyed that speculation and he's proven them wrong already. It's a great start for him already.

Forest's goalkeeping coach has managed to bang his head while celebrating that goal and is currently being patched up on the bench.

    Nice bit of passion there.

  9. Stamford Bridge is alivepublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 17 August

    Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Nizaar Kinsella
BBC Sport Chelsea reporter at Stamford Bridge

There's a different feel about Stamford Bridge today with the home support louder.

They are revelling in becoming world champions and there is a newfound positivity that has spent much of the post-Roman Abramovich era angry and frustrated.

It had left this stadium feeling sterile and, as I have often written in these live updates, quiet.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace away supporters at Stamford Bridge are signing an anti-John Textor and Evangelos Marinakis song after losing being relegated from the Europa League to the Conference League due to problems with their multi-club model. Of course, Nottingham Forest profited.

    Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace

With Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez drifting off his line, Eberechi Eze tries his luck from range, but the opportunistic effort goes well wide of goal.

  11. 'Wood is the first to react'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 17 August

    Nottingham Forest 1-0 Brentford

    Rachel Corsie
Former Scotland and Aston Villa captain on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Brentford didn't defend the corner well and in the end Chris Wood gets a little element of good luck. The ball drops and he is first to react and it's a looping stabbed effort back towards goal. The person on the front post for the initial corner should have been there to clear it but they couldn't quite jump high enough.

  12. goal

    Chris Wood (5 mins)

I said we'd find out soon!

The corner was sent in deep and up Chris Wood goes but the ball drops perfectly at his feet and he guides it beyond Caoimhin Kelleher in the Brentford goal.

  13. 'Good start from Chelsea'published at 14:05 British Summer Time 17 August

    Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Steve Sidwell

A dink to the near post and Marc Cucurella was not going for goal, but he heads it to the far post.

Ismaila Sarr was alive and cleared it off the line. Good start from Chelsea.

Callum Hudson-Odoi uses his pace to burst to the byline and win his side the first corner of the game.

An early chance for Chelsea in the west London sunshine. Reece James clips in a corner, Marc Cucurella flicks it on and it may have just dropped inside the far post, but Palace's Ismaila Sarr is in the right place next to the post to nod the ball off the line.

  16. Postpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 17 August

    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Brentford

Really interesting to see what we get from Forest this season after a stunning seventh place finish last term.

Will Chris Wood be in the goals like he was too? We'll soon find out!

  17. 'Acheampong looks composed'published at 14:03 British Summer Time 17 August

    Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Steve Sidwell
Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at Stamford Bridge

I don't want to put the commentators curse on it, but Josh Acheampong has got on the ball twice and already drove past Jean-Philippe Mateta. Acheampong looks composed.

  18. Postpublished at 14:03 British Summer Time 17 August

Elliot Anderson puts Matz Sels under pressure with his back pass and the goalkeeper makes a bit of a mess of a his clearance but Keane Lewis-Potter isn't able to capitalise on that.

Nine of Crystal Palace's 11 starters today were also in their starting XI on matchday one last season (v Brentford), with only Maxence Lacroix and Ismaïla Sarr stepping in for 2025-26.

  20. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 17 August

Elliot Anderson looks to release Callum Hudson-Odoi down the left wing but there's too much on the pass and out it goes.
