Speaking of Arsenal, the title-chasers were well below-par as Joao Pedro's controversial second half penalty cancelled out Ethan Nwaneri's opener at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta will be thankful that Liverpool were unable to extend their lead at the top to eight points following their surprise draw at home to Manchester United.

Liverpool beginning to look shaky in defence, even with Konate back. Yes, Trent had a poor game but wondering if Gravenberch and Mac are being overplayed with barely any rest? Tough run of fixtures to come for Liverpool, against teams that can score against weak backlines. Title race certainly back on!

  4. 'Great players' Fernandes and Dalot affected Trent, says Slotpublished at 08:33 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

Did the speculation of a move to Real Madrid affect Trent Alexander-Arnold? His manager Arne Slot for one doesn't think so.

"I think nine out of 10 people will tell you that it affected him. I'm [the] one of the 10 that tells you that I don't think that affected him," said the Liverpool boss.

"What affected him is that he had to play against Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, two starters for Portugal, great, great players.

Ex-Manchester United full-back Gary Neville was less convinced, though.

"The supposed bid from Real Madrid is bad timing for him. I think that will have unnerved him - Real Madrid are such a powerful club," he said.

"It wasn't his defending, which we know he does sometimes, I thought his passing and forward play was the worst I've seen."

OK, the celebration did have some things going for it.

There were absolute limbs in the away end - something you love to see.

Lisandro Martinez then grabbed a spare ball and put it under his shirt. He then pumped his fist.

Decent cele, but hardly Marco Tardelli - or Peter Crouch's robot.

Liverpool have reached the halfway point of their Premier League season and while Arne Slot acknowledged that it felt like two points dropped - of course it would when they were 2-1 up with 20 minutes to play - 46 points from 19 matches is a return that if repeated will surely see them equalling Manchester United’s record number of 20 league titles in 2025.

Liverpool have gone 24 matches unbeaten in a single season in all competitions for the first time since 1989. For Slot to oversee that in his first months is remarkable.

Now though another aspect of his managerial skills is to be tested after an avalanche of comment about whether Trent Alexander-Arnold is being affected or not by the current speculation about his possible departure for Real Madrid in the summer.

Slot dealt with it last night in the calm manner in which he has dealt almost everything else so far since arriving at Anfield and it would be a surprise were he and Liverpool to be side-tracked.

Nevertheless, Alexander-Arnold could do with one of his trademark strong performances next time he plays in front of the Anfield crowd.

Next season could be very difficult for Liverpool. Leaders moving on, new players through the door etc.

Two points! Trent has been a brilliant servant for Liverpool but its time to the evolve the team and defence. With a replacement for Robbo also needed and VVD ageing, we need a refresh of the backline and more focus on defensive strength. Our struggles defensively go back to Klopp, whose full throttle style always left us vulnerable at the back. We are now starting to concede lots of goals again this season and teams will be confident of scoring against us. If Trent moves on, Slot will find a better defender and give run outs to Bradley too. Secondly, Trent’s assists and creativity will have to come from midfield. We over rely on Salah and Trent for creativity. If both players leave, I struggle to see who will fill the gap. No one in midfield has secured being our number 10 outright - Jones and Dom are not consistent enough, but I do hope Elliot stakes a claim for it.

Tom, a more balanced Liverpool fan!

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in the headlines this week as Real Madrid made an audacious bid to take him to the Bernabeu in January.

Liverpool rejected the move out of hand as speculation continues to surround the England defender about an end-of-season free transfer to La Liga.

Head coach Arne Slot was at pains to insist Alexander-Arnold has not been affected by the talk, but his cause was not helped by his hapless display against United.

The visitors preyed on Alexander-Arnold's defensive weakness throughout, launching regular raids down Liverpool's right flank, while his usual strong point of passing was also horribly wayward.

It was a poor pass by Alexander-Arnold that led to Martinez's opener while Diallo's equaliser originated on his flank.

Alexander-Arnold was shown a yellow card three minutes after Diallo's goal and it was almost a merciful release when he was replaced by Conor Bradley shortly after.

Thanks for your messages Andrew and Matt.

Is that the solution then for teams playing Liverpool? Try your absolute best to stop Mohamed Salah getting on the ball?

And, if Liverpool are that reliant on the Egyptian, it must absolutely terrify their supporters that he could leave for free in the summer.

No denying Trent was poor yesterday, I think that has more to do with how well United managed him. I was sat in the SKD stand and it was obvious from the start that was the game plan. Dalot and Martinez were equally petrified of Salah when he got the ball, we just didn’t get him the ball enough unlike United who stuck to their game plan.

I haven't enjoyed a game of football for so long than Sunday. It was absolutely thrilling. Both teams were going for it and it was a really special one.

Manchester United rolled back the years to a certain extent and Liverpool were just finding a way back.

An alternative view to Dhilan’s is that Salah didn’t do enough to get to Trent’s pass and then didn’t track back when Martinez carried it forward. I agree that Trent was well below his normal high levels though.

  17. What are we talking about today?published at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

Hello to all those just joining us!

There's plenty to get our teeth into this morning as we react to the weekend's Premier League action.

Right now we're talking about Manchester United's draw at Liverpool.

Is that the Red Devils' best game under Ruben Amorim? And what was missing from Liverpool's performance?

  18. 'You've got to question United's character'published at 07:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    FT: Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Football Daily

Bruno Fernandes said after the game that Manchester United need that performance week in, week out.

But it's only the players who can give it and you've got to question their character.

They get the results against Liverpool and Manchester City - all the big games you want to play in.

But it's the games that you are meant to win against teams lower down in the Premier League that will get you into the Champions League and get you the points to climb up the table - the unglamorous grind.

It's all there for United, but it's the desire sometimes.

  19. Amorim eyes Southampton testpublished at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

The draw at Anfield yesterday meant Manchester United have avoided the potential scenario of meeting Southampton at Old Trafford on 16 January on the back of six successive defeats.

Scrapping FA Cup replays means United must either win or lose next Sunday's third round tie at Arsenal.

But there seemed to be a general sense coming out of the United camp last night wondering why they can be so effective in an away game at Liverpool, yet be so pitiful in home defeats by Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest.

United remain in the bottom half of the Premier League. They are now nine points behind eighth-placed Aston Villa.

That Southampton game has to be won to give the club's supporters any confidence the season will get better.

    Cheers for your message Chris.

Both Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes raised these points in their post-match interviews.

Both talked about their frustration that United were able to show up against Liverpool but have struggled in other matches in recent weeks.

Both said that the Liverpool performance should be the new standard.
