  4. Owls hoping to improve home form despite ‘huge step forward’published at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2024

Sheffield Wednesday go into today’s game on the back of two straight wins.

Victory against struggling Preston would make it three in a row for the first time since August.

The Owls came from behind at Derby to pick up a 2-1 win last Saturday meaning they have collected more points from losing positions than any other side in the Championship this season (10), four of which have come in their past three league games.

However, boss Danny Rohl acknowledges that his side need to improve at home having only won three of their nine games in the Championship at Hillsborough.

"Of course we want to win home games but coming back from 1-0 down [at Derby] shows a lot about our mentality and belief," Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield.

After 18 games last season, the Owls had only seven points, but following seven wins in 2024-25, they've improved that by 18 points and sit 12th in the table, five points outside the top six.

"We have 25 points which is a huge step forward," Rohl added.

Draw specialists Preston have no wins in their past eight league games. Six of those have been draws including three prior to today’s game.

The Lilywhites have won two of their past three away league games (L1) against Sheffield Wednesday, though, while the Owls have won just two of their past seven league games against Preston (D1 L4), one of which came in the last meeting between the pair during a 1-0 success at Deepdale.

  5. Le Bris aims to create 'positive dynamic'published at 12:11 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2024

    Sunderland v Stoke (12:30 GMT)

Sunderland and boss Regis Le Bris are out of their honeymoon period and right in the thick of it, without a win for six league games - albeit their only loss of those six was to league leaders Sheffield United in November.

It would be unfair to say the love had been lost - and Le Bris even says himself that one good result can create a new positive dynamic - but the romantic dream of winning the league seems to be slipping away.

Though it might not be too late to seek a reconciliation with the top of the table, and beating Stoke City this afternoon would send the right message.

The Potters and the Black Cats have the youngest sides in the Championship and, not dissimilar to the hosts, Stoke are on their own winless run of four games (3D 1L).

However Stoke are all the way back in 14th and Sunderland are still in fourth place despite the recent lacklustre results.

Is this the time for Le Bris to bring the spark back to the patrons of the Stadium of Light?

Middlesbrough's hard-earned point at Burnley last night has given Leeds the chance to leapfrog the Clarets and Sheffield United, who visit West Bromwich Albion tomorrow, to top the Championship table.

They face a Derby side without a win in four league games and boast a good recent record against the Rams.

Leeds are unbeaten in their last five league games against the visitors, who have won just once in their last seven trips to Elland Road.

Derby's play-off semi-final win in 2019 - where they did win 4-2 in the second leg at Leeds - under Frank Lampard's management adds an extra level of spice to the occasion in the wake of the "Spygate" saga, in which Leeds were fined £200,000 for sending a member of staff to watch their opponents before their league game earlier that season.

Middlesbrough ended Burnley's five game clean sheet streak on Friday as Anfernee Dijksteel gave them an early lead at Turf Moor.

The Clarets equalised before the break but, despite a late surge, could only claim a point against their promotion-chasing rivals.

It meant Scott Parker's side missed the chance to climb above Sheffield United and go top.

With red weather warnings in place across Wales, last night's announcement that today's game between Cardiff and Watford in the Welsh capital had been called off came as no great shock.

Plymouth's game against Oxford United at Home Park today was also postponed with fan safety in mind.

The final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park before Everton move out of their historic ground has also been called off this lunchtime, while the following games across League One and League Two have all been postponed (all kick-offs 15:00 GMT unless stated):

    Bristol Rovers v Bolton Wanderers

    Crawley Town v Stevenage

    Barrow v Milton Keynes Dons

    Newport County v Carlisle United

    Notts County v Colchester United
