Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has praised the fans for their support of Sandro Tonali, as the Italy midfielder made his first appearance in the Premier League since serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

A host of Italy-themed flags were on display before the game, along with a banner that said 'Midfield maestro from Milano'.

"I didn't know that was going to happen with the wall of flags so it was a brilliant surprise - visually it was incredible," said Howe.

"Sandro was emotional and his performance when he came on was outstanding. It was just amazing from the fans, it does not surprise me, but it's so important that the relationship between players and supporters is so strong.

"It was very different to [him coming on in the] Nottingham Forest game. We were in need of a spark and I thought he gave us that."

Cole Palmer has provided four assists in Chelsea’s three Premier League matches this season.

Chelsea have also scored 47 goals at Stamford Bridge in 17 matches in 2024, the most home goals of any club across Europe’s big-five leagues (in all competitions).

  4. 'We are not getting the rewards our football deserves'published at 16:25 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to Sky Sports: "Another one that got away from us. We had the chances to win the game pretty comfortably but you walk away with nothing. A bitter pill to swallow but it is what it is.

"We created chances, we had the momentum. I thought we were in control of the game, we were playing in their half and their keeper pulled off a couple of good saves.

"When we are creating the amount of chances we have we should really be getting more than we have as a return.

"The postives are that our football is good and has been for three games, we just need the rewards for our football. What I do know is if we play like that we will get our rewards."

  5. 'We can concentrate on the football'published at 16:24 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it's always important to try to build momentum in your season and it's been a turbulent time for the club off the pitch throughout this last transfer window.

"But that's shut now, so hopefully we can just concentrate on the football and get the players playing as well as they can."

  6. 'For Chelsea now, sometimes you don't win and it is normal'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, speaking to MOTD: "We completely deserved to win the game with the amount of chances we had. Overall the performance was good. The direction is the correct one."

Should Will Hughes have been sent off? "What can I say? In that moment we were also 1-0 up and the game completely would change 11 v 10. The referee saw in different ways so now there is nothing I can do.

"Once they scored the game became up and down and when the game is up and down and especially against Palace, they are more dangerous than us. We had chances to win the game late on, we didn't win and it is a shame but the performance was good.

"Probably one thing that has to be clear, Chelsea three years ago won the Champions League but now it is not that kind of Chelsea so now sometimes if you dont win it is normal."

  8. 'I'm happy the referee didn't destroy my Sunday'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to Sky Sports: "Congrats to the team for the performance particularly in the second half. That was really, really good and we scored a fantastic goal. It was a great team performance today and I am very pleased with the point.

"I have such a high respect of this group. I know their character. We had 14 players from the first team squad today with some injuries and the new players arrived on the last day so couldn't play today.

"In this situation it is really amazing how they stick together. I am really proud to be manager of this amazing group."

On Eberechi Eze goal: "In this situation it is very often a goal. He could have had three or four goals already after three games. We know when he gets the ball in this area he can always score. It is just to get him there."

Should Will Hughes have been sent off? "I don't know if he was lucky but it was a very big mistake from myself. My assistant said at half time to take him off but I decided to keep him longer. I am really happy the referee didn't destroy my Sunday.

"He was a little bit late but it was not a terrible foul. I think it was a good decision for the game because otherwise there would have been many yellow cards and we want to see 11 v 11."

  10. Chelsea 'going in the right direction' despite drawpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, speaking to Sky Sports: "We completely deserved to win the game. We had many, many chances. The most important thing was the performance and the performance was there. We conceded just two shots today.

"We didn't take the three points but playing the way we did today, I think we will win games."

Should Will Hughes have been sent off? "This kind of thing for sure changes the game. It was clear second yellow card but the referee thinks in different ways.

"I feel a bit shame for the result but not the performance. The direction is the correct one.

"With the players arriving now we can even better."

Eberechi Eze has scored five Premier League goals from outside the box in 2024, the joint-most of any player along with Manchester City’s Phil Foden.

All of Eze’s last three goals in the competition have been from outside the box.

  12. 'We have to be more clinical'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson speaking to Sky Sports: "Yeah really disappointed. I think in the first half we were decent and created a few chances. Our general play wasn't too bad. In the second half we came out well and pushed them back. It's about doing what we can with the chances we created. We have to be more clinical.

"I definitely think it's just responsibility on us guys. We are getting into good areas. It's probably our final ball. It's about creating the right chance. There were a few opportunities today where we could have shot and not pass, then others when we could have passed and not shot. It's disappointing to concede in that manner too.

"I think it's hard. The manager always wants me to be positive. It was the perfect opportunity to come out and be fearless. We started really well in the second half. I thought I did well when I came on but we had to see the game out and get three points today.

"Nobody will complain about putting Sonny [Son Heung-min] up front because he can score an amazing amount of goals. I wouldn't put it on that. There's no excuses on that front. I think it's about adapting to what guys we have up front and creating the right chances."

  13. 'Story of our season so far'published at 15:55 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Story of our season so far really. We played well and controlled the game for the most part. They were a threat in transition but we still had enough chances to win the game comfortably.

"I thought we were handling the transitions. The goal we conceded in the second half was sloppy and we lost focus. The game should have been put to bed a lot longer before that.

"What I know is if we continue to play like that we will get our rewards. It's not an easy place to come. For the most part, I thought we handled that really well. The way we controlled the game was really pleasing.

"Frustrating more than anything else. It's three good performances but not the results that reflect that."

Incredibly naive from Spurs. Ange has built a team that can dominate an opponent without being clinical enough to score except with help from the opposition, while simultaneously being average defensively, giving away terrible goals. Enough to make fans tear their hair out.

Jadon Sancho was watching on next to co-owner Behdad Eghbali and the two sporting directors who signed him - Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart - from the directors' box.

There was excitement as he was announced last night but the familiar question will remain - how good would this team be with a world class striker?

Nicolas Jackson worked hard and scored the opening goal but he also missed two late chances to win the match.

Chelsea threw everything they had at Palace in the second half as Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku came off the bench.

But none of them looked like scoring as Palace looked tactically superior after Eberechi Eze's excellent equaliser.

It poses the question, would another winger like Sancho have made the difference had he been available? The answer invariably feels like no, definitely not.

Should Chelsea have forced a deal with Napoli and Victor Osimhen's outspoken agent, Roberto Calenda, than sign Sancho on loan from Manchester United?

  16. 'I know we will get our rewards'published at 15:45 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglu speaking to Sky Sports: "It got away from us unfortunately. We had the chances to win the game probably comfortably but we walk away with nothing so it's a bitter pill to swallow. It is what it is.

"If you don't get the second goal when you have momentum... The keeper has pulled off a couple of good saves but we still had the chances to create something more and we didn't.

"When we're creating the amount of chances we have, we should be getting more in return than what we have been at the moment.

"The positives are that our football is good and has been in the past three games. We just need to get our rewards for our football. If we continue to play like that, I know we will get our rewards."

  18. 'Small changes made big difference'published at 15:37 British Summer Time 1 September

    FT: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Alexander Isak speaking to Sky Sports: "It is my first goal for the season so it's a good feeling that I score that one and we get the win.

"Generally we weren't expecting to have too much of the ball. We wanted to be dangerous on the counter-attack. It wasn't the most beautiful game from our side but we defended really well and scored two so that's good.

"You always have to be concentrated. It's easy to get frustrated. It was a tough game and tough for me - I wasn't at my sharpest. Jacob Murphy had a great assist, very selfless, so it was just being in the right place.

"We've always, at home, felt like we have that extra energy. We have spoken about using that. In the second half when we had a bit of a dip in our performance, we got some energy. Small changes made a big difference and really helped us get the win."

  19. 'Loudest roar of the afternoon'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 1 September

Nick Pope launches the ball forwards, the referee blows his whistle and it is met by the loudest roar of the afternoon - and there have been some contenders.

Newcastle are delighted and have every right to be. Spurs suffer their first loss of the season and will not be sure how they've done so.

They deserved something, but don't get it. Newcastle fans won't care about that though. Their unbeaten start to the season continues. Seven points from nine and progression in the Carabao Cup.

Plus the return of Sandro Tonali. A lot to be happy about for Newcastle's fans. Excellent match. Enjoyable from start to finish.
