I think Manchester City are in the driving seat now. Newcastle's run-in looks trickiest on paper, Chelsea have to play two of the other contenders too. I'm backing Forest and Villa to take advantage and nab the remaining spots.

  2. Will Forest secure Champions League football?published at 11:18 British Summer Time 23 April

    Nottingham Forest

We will continue to chat about Manchester City, while also bringing in the other teams competing for a top-five spot.

Nottingham Forest are currently fourth, one point behind City having played a game less, and three points ahead of Chelsea in sixth.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side will face Chelsea at home on the final day of the season.

Here are their remaining five fixtures:

    • 1 May - Brentford (H)
    • 5 May - Crystal Palace (A)
    • 11 May - Leicester (H)
    • 18 May - West Ham (A)
    • 25 May - Chelsea (H)

Click thumbs up if you think Forest will finish in the top five, and thumbs down if you don't.

Craig Nelson with an absolute peach of a reducer on Colin the City fan! He won't want to see that one again!

  4. 'Grealish, Silva, Walker?' - Brown on potential Man City departurespublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 23 April

    Man City 2-1 Aston Villa

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

You are looking [at the Manchester City squad] and saying 'well who is not playing?'.

Jack Grealish is the main talking point. What is going to happen [to him]? He is not getting minutes. Obviously he is a very, very good player, so Jack is a possibility.

Bernardo Silva has also been mentioned.

The focus has been on such an iconic player in Kevin de Bruyne. It will be a sad day when he does leave.

Obviously there is the issue with Kyle Walker as well. He is possibly going to leave the football club [permanently, following his loan move to AC Milan in January].

There is a lot of thinking for Pep [Guardiola] and the [recruitment] team to sort because they have obviously realised this year how far they have been [off leaders Liverpool].

Rodri coming back, we have got to consider that. It will take him a bit of time, but that will certainly improve any team.

  5. Rodri return would provide timely boostpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 23 April

    Man City 2-1 Aston Villa

Rodri was an interested observer on Tuesday night at Etihad Stadium, pictured sitting next to injured striker Erling Haaland.

The Spain midfielder is nearing the end of his recovery from the knee injury he suffered in the 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal in September.

Former Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown, in assessing the members of the squad that may prove to be surplus to requirements, said Rodri's return would provide an immediate boost to City's fortunes - either next season or even in this summer's Club World Cup...

Sorry Jon, but Man City have definitely been worse this year. There have been times where they couldn't even get the basics right and some of their best players have been completely out of form. Once Rodri got injured they completely deflated. I expect next season we will probably see more of the old City as Rodri seems to lift the team so much when he plays.

As a point of order Colin, I'm no mathematician, but even with my rudimentary skills it is clear that Liverpool CAN break 90 points this season.

The Premier League leaders are currently on 79 points and have five games remaining, meaning they have 15 points to play for so can reach a maximum of 94 points.

    That's right, isn't it?

Colin, Manchester City fan: Re Jon 10:30, I don't agree with your comment about City as we constantly won the league with well over 90 points. If LFC win all their remaining games they still won't even reach 90 points, so I think it is us (City) who have lost a couple of gears this season and not others playing better. The fact we are so bad but still up there fighting is a scathing indictment on the quality of the other teams in the division.

  9. Man City's remaining gamespublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 23 April

    Manchester City

Jon has nicely framed the debate for Manchester City there so let's start with them.

City's win over Aston Villa last night put them in the driving seat for a top-five spot.

They are third in the Premier League, having played a game more than most of their rivals, barring Villa.

Let's take a look at their four remaining fixtures:

    • 2 May - Wolves (H)
    • 10 May - Southampton (A)
    • 18 May - Bournemouth (H)
    • 25 May - Fulham (A)

Click thumbs up if you think they will qualify for the Champions League, thumbs down if you think they will miss out.

I don't think City have got worse this season, but rather the competition has got better. Pep Guardiola has won the title four years running, and only Liverpool have broken that sequence by winning in 2020. Now, we have a more competitive top half of the league, where the decline of United and Spurs, and the (relatively) weaker season from City, has allowed teams such as Villa, Newcastle, and Forest to shake up the Champions League order. Even with a summer rebuild, City can't expect the level of dominance they previously enjoyed, at least in the immediate future.

As part of this morning's conversation, we will also be looking at:

    • What has gone right or wrong this season for each club in contention for a Champions League place?
    • What do you think each club needs to boost their chances next season?

For instance, Manchester City have already started a squad rebuild after their quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title hit the buffers mid-season.

So how do you rate the players they have brought in, and which players do City need to replace to be back challenging for the title next season?

  13. Who will qualify for next season's Champions League?published at 10:15 British Summer Time 23 April

Right, we are going to keep the conversation going on the race for Champions League qualification and which of the main contenders are best placed to seal one the five spots on offer.

At the risk of upsetting cautious Arsenal supporters, we will assess your chances later on, when we switch to build-up ahead of tonight's game against Crystal Palace.

For now, we are looking at sides from Manchester City, in third place, down to Aston Villa in seventh [see the league table below]:

"Level on points on xG if the game finished early and the opposition hadn't have gotten a penalty...you'll never sing that."

Thanks for the message Harry, lots to unpack there.

But I'm interested in "Emi Martinez doubter" - was he at fault for City's first goal?

Late to the xG debate but take away the penalty (0.79) and citys last minute goal (0.36) and you're looking at a perfectly even game on xG 0.97 each Game could have gone either way but was decided by a keeper mistake, simple as that If the Bernardo goal is in the last minute it's the Villa Captain we're talking about!

Harry Man City Fan (and Martinez doubter)

The xG vs shots argument that's going on is down to the fact a penalty is worth about 0.8 xG which is why Villa 'won' the xG battle with fewer shots and quality chances.

Steve @08:30 - sadly money talks and a season out of the Champions League won't stop top players moving to Man City or any other club with big wages to give.
