Another interesting conclusion from last week's PL games is how the flavour of the month form team in top 7 have suddenly had a reality check and how it's like dominos. It happened to Newcastle at Villa and then Villa at City. Will it happen to City?

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Wake Up to Money presenter and Aston Villa fan Will Bain laid his frustrations bare on 5 Live Breakfast this morning, telling a personal account of how he threw his phone across the pub in disgust after Manchester City's Matheus Nunes scored a last-minute winner against his side.

He admitted the frustration boiled over at the end of a week that has seen his side suffer heartbreak at the hands of Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals, and has now been compounded by what could prove to be a damaging defeat in their quest to qualify for next season's competition.

"It's funny isn't it...momentum in sport is just a mad thing, isn't it?", he said, fearing the worst as Villa prepare for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

"[Unai] Emery's face, blowing out when they cut to the slo-mo, you just felt like 'yeah, I know exactly how you feel mate'.

"Football makes you do inexplicable things sometimes, doesn't it? As it hit the back of the net I just, like a frisbee, flicked my phone across the pub. Just flung it away. For no particular reason, just tossed it towards the bar and walked to the loo.

"I'm at Wembley on Saturday and the stress of that now. It just feels like 'why am I doing this? Why am I spending my free time doing this?'."

I wonder if the prospect of playing for Manchester City and Guardiola is still a strong enough pull for potential top players, even without the Champions League.

It's been so long since Manchester City haven't been in Europe's premier club competition - 2010-11.

With the players expected to leave City this summer, the win last night would feel like a trophy to Pep. The summer rebuild will need the provision of Champions League to entice the players City are targeting to put pen to paper.

FT: Man City 2-1 Aston Villa

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

After Tuesday's last-gasp victory over Aston Villa moved Manchester City up to third place in the Premier League, their focus now switches to Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Wembley.

Former City midfielder Michael Brown told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that if they could beat Forest and finish the season with victory in the FA Cup final, then that, coupled with qualification for the Champions League, would represent a successful season.

"If you end on that trophy in the FA Cup final, then yes," said Brown, acknowledging that City had been aiming for a fifth consecutive Premier League title but would settle for an eighth FA Cup final victory in the club's history as a consolation.

"I am there at the weekend. It's going to be another difficult game.

"To finish third would be a positive and then it is going to be all eyes on what happens next for City. How can they be more consistent?

"There is talk about how they evolve the squad and then obviously there is the Club World Cup as well. So it's an interesting summer coming up for City."

Five wins and a draw in our last six. And we’ve had to turn round four of them. City are so back.

Seeing Guardiola's celebration was a reminder of how our goals and expectations shift as the season progresses. At the start of the season, nobody would have expected City to be so overjoyed at scraping a top 5 finish. Some even suggest it has turned out not to be such a bad season for City now. That is pure copium. It's been a terrible year.

Nothing to do for about 75 minutes, then Matheus Nunes comes up with this! Was about to turn off the TV, as well! I said he was a bit of a flop, to be honest. Felt like a bit of an idiot after that.

  12. Guardiola's 'aggressive' celebration because 'he knew it was tight'published at 08:07 British Summer Time 23 April

    Man City 2-1 Aston Villa

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on 5 Live Breakfast

He [Pep Guardiola] was aggressive in his celebration because he knew it was tight. He knew he had been put under a lot of pressure.

It was about just having the patience. I was wondering was he was thinking 'you know what, I will take a draw here'? He doesn't want to get beaten. I think that was in his mind - not to open up too early.

But what an ending. Jeremy Doku finally produced a little bit of magic, and of all people Matheus Nunes gets the winner.

Granted, most matches would be about five minutes long and end in a 0-0.

But Marc's right. If results were based off injury-time, Villa would be relegation candidates.
