Cornish Pirates are now six points clear of Bedford after their win at Goldington Road

Cornish Pirates continued their excellent Championship form with a 27-21 win at fifth-placed Bedford Blues.

Pirates impressed as Alex Schwarz's 28th-minute try cancelled out a score for Alex Day before Joe Jenkins and Morgan Nelson went over as the first half came to an end to lead 27-7.

Dean Adamson went over after 53 minutes as the hosts upped the pressure.

But Pirates held out until James Lennon scored in the final minute to ensure a tense finale at Goldington Road.

The win keeps Pirates in second place and is the second win in a series of three successive difficult away trips.

Last week Pirates beat then-Championship leaders Coventry and next week go to current leaders Ealing knowing a victory would send them top.

"I'm pleased to get over the line, it's great to add some learnings when you're winning on the road against a really good side," joint-head coach Gavin Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"We took a lot of energy out of the in that first half, they played a lot around halfway and didn't make a lot of gains.

"That gives you a bit more energy in attack when you're turning it over, but I've got to say what gave us a foothold in the game was our scrum power again, it didn't allow them to launch cleanly in that first half.

"The fixups for us are our execution, we had some trigger moments and pressure moments where we really could have turned the screw.

"It's good to have those talking points on the back of a win."
