Johns Stevens opened the scoring for Cornish Pirates

Cornish Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle described his side as 'outstanding' in their 32-14 win at Caldy in the Championship.

Tries from skipper John Stevens, Will Trewin and Lefty Zigiriadis helped Pirates into a 19-0 half-time lead.

A penalty try after yellow cards for Alex Schwarz and Morgan Nelson reduced Pirates down to 13 men, but they did well to keep Caldy out.

Tom Georgiou's try secured a bonus point before a late Caldy try.

"I thought first half we were outstanding," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"We kept the ball for long periods and then second half the aim was do turn the screw.

"A sequence of events led to two yellow cards, but we dealt with that pretty well - we had John Stevens playing at nine and throwing into the lineout."

The win keeps Pirates in second place in the Championship as they returned after a fortnight off following their defeat at leaders Ealing.

"We've got a bit of a theme of cranking our performances up," Cattle added.

"We've had two weeks off from the league programme and it was how do we hit this block of league games now and trying to sustain the fight at the right end of the table."
