    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca told BBC Sport: "The spirit of the team. First half we were in control of the game. We could have scored more goals.

"The second half except the last 10 minutes where we struggled, which is normal, we deserved to win the game.

"This is the reason why I said there are many things we can do better and why we're not ready to concede for titles. If you see the goal we conceded it was a throw-in to us, 90 minutes. The team that are ready to compete for that use the ball in the right way.

"We plan some solution during the game and that [Cucurella goal] was one of them.

"Not only Nico [Jackson], players miss chances and they score a goal. Important is the attitude. Nico was unbelievable on and off the ball. He worked really hard and we're very happy with him.

"For me no matter how many games we win, there are things we're not ready to compete for the title in this moment. A team who knows how to win wouldn't concede that goal. We're in the right direction.

"The fans, they can dream and think. But us inside as a club, as a squad, as players, as coaching staff, we need to be realistic.

"I said we have many things we can do better and this [Cucurella's red card] is one of them."

  5. 'Not a reflection of Martin or his staff'published at 21:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Southampton

Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis speaking to Premier League Productions: "It was difficult. It's tough to speak right after it. We just killed ourselves with the first action of the game really and went 1-0 down. Then when you are in this moments, it creates a bit of indecision in the team. We put ourselves on the backfoot to start with and it killed us.

"It's quite clear with us three or four goals down in the first half that we are not playing at the level we should be. We have been at that level before and still haven't won the game It's the story of our season really.

"It's hard to take for the lads and the manger as well. Its not a reflection of him or his staff. It's difficult. It wasn't good enough and we know that."

On fans: "They want to see the team win, so it's normal. The booing should be on us players and not the manager. He's not creating the mistakes. It is us on the pitch. But they just want to see the team win. Credit to them, they stuck with us after a first half that wasn't acceptable. I can't thank them enough for sticking with us till the end."

On Kamaldeen Sulemana: "He is not really happy. He wants to play football but it's not personal. We had to changes something as we were 3-0 down. It's unfortunate it was he who had to come off. It's not personal to him."

On what needs to change: "We need to be better. It's as simple as that. We have got boys in there who's willing to put anything on the line. It sounds a bit deluded, but we have what it takes in this dressing room [to stay up].

"We are not going to stop believing. We got to play for ourselves. We got pride and we want to do more than anyone. We are never giving up. It's not an option."

  6. 'We were in control of the game except the last 10 minutes'published at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca: "We were in control of the game except the last 10 minutes where we concede. It's normal.

"We created chances. We could have scored more. We deserved to win the game."

On Marc Cucurella: "It's all about the position. You have to be in the right position and if you are you'll have a chance. We worked with Marc in this game to arrive and be in the right position. We are very happy. It's not something normal because he's not a big full-back. We worked in the week for this kind of solution and we've been lucky."

On Nicolas Jackson: "I said after the Tottenham game he didn't score but he did the most important thing. The rest were celebrating and he was the only one going for the ball. Off the ball he worked hard."

On Cucurella's red card: "I didn't see the second yellow card. The referee said the second yellow card was for bad attitude. There are things we can do better.

"Just two teams have conceded less than us. Defensively we're not doing bad. We'd like to end with a clean sheet but there's another team trying to score."

On the title race: "It's not about how many games we win. It's about being realistic. There are things we have to do better. That's why I said for me we are not ready."

  7. 'It makes it hard to fall asleep tonight'published at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard: "Of course it's disappointing but we didn't give up. We created chaos at the end."

On his chance: "It makes it hard to fall asleep tonight. You think I should have done this. It's one of them where you wish you could turn back time and do it differently.

"Chelsea away is never going to be an easy game. It wasn't the likely one to change our away form but it will come. It's not on our minds. We're in a good position."

  8. 'We know we are capable of blowing teams away'published at 21:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We know we're capable of that. We're capable of blowing teams away. The style of football we play - the all action entertaining style of play we know we are capable of that. I'm really proud of the boys, it was a big night for us tonight. We had a poor loss at Bournemouth and lost at home to Chelsea and drew to Rangers - when you're a big team you get fingers pointed at you. Make no mistake about it, that was a big night for us to go and win. People will point to Southampton and being low in the division but we've struggled against the lesser teams a little bit. I'm really proud of the lads to come here and put in that performance and getting three points."

On whether they used the outside noise to spur them on tonight: "You always want to prove people wrong that doubt. We want to be that on a more consistent basis. We are down to the bare bones and we've got kids travelling with us. We're missing big names and leaders. I'm really proud of the lads. We've got Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Djed Spence - three young lads coming in. The Premier League is tough and you can come and struggle here. It was a good night for us."

On whether the performance shows a lot about the mentality of the squad: "Fans and external media are very reactionary and emotional. We had a tough Thursday night in Glasgow and managed to get a point. The majority of the lads that played in that and played again, we were back on Friday morning and away from our family - the side that people don't see. So like I said I am really proud of the lads to come here and put in a performance like that."

  9. Postpublished at 21:34 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

No side have earned fewer points away from home in the Premier League this season than Brentford (one). Only Southampton (four) and Everton (five) have scored fewer goals on the road so far than the Bees (six).

  10. Postpublished at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

Southampton have picked up just five points from their first 16 Premier League matches this season (W1 D2 L13), with Sheffield United in 2020-21 the only team to have picked up fewer points at this stage of the campaign in Premier League history (two points).

  11. Postpublished at 21:29 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

Only Derby County (-32 in 07-08), Sheffield United (-29 in 23-24), Barnsley (-29 in 97-98) and Sheffield Wednesday (-26 in 99-00) have had a worse goal difference after 16 Premier League matches of a campaign than Southampton's -25.

  12. 'A draw would have been well deserved in my opinion'published at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank told BBC Sport: "I'm very pleased with the performance. The players gave everything.

"This is a very good Chelsea team with very good players and they've spent a few quid. Well coached.

"Second half we were better. A draw would have been well deserved in my opinion. We hit the crossbar, other big chances.

"We created quite a bit of trouble for Chelsea which you could see how much it meant to them. They are right up there as favourites for the title and well deserved.

"I don't think there's one [Chelsea] player left from the first two times we won here.

"If you look at the performance today against a top team who will go right to the end of the season and try to win the title, the way they celebrated it was clear they respected us and we could easily have got something. Maybe we could win it."

  13. 'I'm lost for words'published at 21:25 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Southampton

Southampton forward Adam Armstrong speaking to TNT Sports: "It's a tough one to take. At this level you get cut open quite easily and we got punished straight away. It's hard to put into words really. We weren't good enough, it's as simple as that. You try and get the group going again at half-time. We gave everything when we came out second-half but it's just one of those nights - not good enough."

On what went wrong: "We just got punished in the wrong moments. When to press and when not to. They cut us open a few times and the first goal was 40/50 seconds which just isn't good enough at this level. We've seen how brutal this league is and once you're cut open it's just hard to stop them. I've got nothing else to say really it just wasn't good enough from all of us.

On whether there was enough instruction from the bench: "We were there to do a job and we set up to do a job. It was just one of those nights it just didn't go our away. The lads gave everything throughout the second-half. I'm lost for words. It's a tough one because you can't start that bad in any sport and we got punished."

On whether the confidence has taken a hit: "You could say that. It's not easy when you're bottom of the Premier League. Confidence comes from wins and that's something we're not doing at the minute. I can't fault the lads, we give it everything every day to earn why we should be here. We don't want to take it for granted. We work hard every day and nights like tonight we got punished.

"I've said in previous interviews the Premier League is the best in the world and when you're coming up against these teams it's tough. I've got nothing else to say it's a tough one for me and the team. We have to move forward and take everyday as it comes."

  14. 'They are right up there in the title race'published at 21:22 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank: "We played a very good game here. We were unlucky not to get a draw. Some big chances we missed in the end.

"We managed for the 90 minutes to go toe to toe with Chelsea, especially in the second half. A draw would have been fair.

"Chelsea are a very good team, well coached, very good players. They spent a few quid on the squad. They're playing with confidence. Credit to them for pushing us back in the first half.

"Second half we were more aggressive and played higher. You could see how much trouble we caused them by how much they celebrated 2-0 and at the time.

"They are right up there in the title race. They're very good.

"It was a very competitive game with two teams who wanted to win. It can get heated."

  15. 'Keep winning, keep the momentum'published at 21:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Brentford

    Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo: "We are happy. This feeling is so good for us. We'll keep working to keep up.

"We are enjoying it. We're doing fantastic. N'Golo Kante is my idol. I try to help the team. He's a very big player. I try my best.

"The sky's the limit. We will keep working hard. Keep winning, keep the momentum."

  16. 'Didn't recognise our team in first half'published at 21:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Southampton

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to TNT Sports: "I was hurt in the first half. We did not respond very well to the setbacks as a group. We have seen that all too often this season. After the first goal, our response was very poor.

"It's most disappointing because we had worked on a plan. We had a week's training and the players have been part of that process. But we did not carry out anywhere near the intensity or aggression we needed. I didn't recognise our team in the first half. But I am pleased they stuck out in the second half.

"At this point, it is about pride and showing some care for each other."

On the fans: "They were amazing in the second half. Really good."

On whether he was hurt by the boos: "As a person, no. Because I understand that it's not personal. But as a manager, yes. It hurts me as well as the team. But I also understand it.

On future: "We have no choice but to keep working and fighting. It's what I have been doing in this job and I will continue doing it until I am told not to."

  17. 'It was an outstanding performance by the players'published at 21:13 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2024

    FT: Southampton 0-5 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to TNT Sports: "It was outstanding by the players. We had a tough European game away on Thursday night. We had 10 first-team players unavailable tonight and for the lads to come out with that much energy. We had to come out quickly because we knew we were going to get tired. We are asking a lot of our layers and the quality and energy showed was outstanding."

On scoring so early: "We've had great opportunities in the last few games early on and if we'd have taken them then you put pressure on the opposition. I said to them before the game let's be ready, let's have a fast start. It was great endeavour by Djed and a great finish by Maddison."

On Djed Spence: "He has had to bide his time. to be fair to him whenever he has played he ha down well. We haven't been able to give him too much game time because full-back is one of the positions we have a bit of cover but we needed him to come in and play at a good level and he did. It's a credit to him."

On Destiny Ugodie's injury: "He felt something but he wanted to continue. We can't take risks at the moment. I don't think it's anything too bad."

On how important a win tonight was: "It helps. You just want the players to feel good and get a reward for their efforts. We can't rest or rotate and you want them to feel good. They get their reward tonight and we'll recover and get ready for a big game on Thursday."

Tottenham's James Maddison speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a great night for us. It's an important night. There are so many big teams all throughout the league who are struggling to get results and are on a tough patch. We were on one tonight. It was important to get that win. That was a big night for us.

"We can blow away any team in this league, and not just Southampton. We did the same at Manchester City. But we need to do it on a regular basis. We showed grit and determination, especially after a rapid turnaround after Glasgow. I am proud of the boys."

On Djed Spence: "He's been patient and he's a great lad. He is a laidback character and I don't think he needed too much of a pep talk. But I told him before the game to go out and do what he does best. It was a great pass from him and big credit to Djed for that."
