Ross Allen's late goal put Guernsey FC 2-1 up against Thatcham Town

Guernsey FC striker Ross Allen is still the best in the league, according to manager Tony Vance.

The 36-year-old, who is the club's all-time record goalscorer, was key to the Green Lions' late 3-1 victory over Thatcham Town on Saturday.

Having superbly set up Matt Loaring's opener, Allen got Guernsey's second as they earned a fifth win of the season.

"I think he's the best striker in the league and his numbers are just second to none," Vance told BBC Guernsey.

Allen - who won the Oceania Champions League with New Zealand side Team Wellington in 2018 and played in the 2019 Club World Cup - has scored 289 goals for the club in 310 games, with his effort against Thatcham his fifth in eight appearances this season.

"He often saves us. He did really well for Matt's goal and obviously got his one at the back post," added Vance.

"Believe it or not he's always in and around that area, that's where he knows he's going to get something, but credit to the throw, it was a perfect throw and a great flick on - whilst it was a tap in, he did what he does.

"We're lucky to have those quality players and we need them to turn up when it's tight."

The victory saw Guernsey move up to fourth-from-bottom of Isthmian League South Central, eight points above the relegation places.

"The curve is going up in terms of our performances, over the last two or three months they've been really, really good," added Vance after the win.

"We've been unlucky in games, we probably don't deserve to be where we are in terms of our performances, but you've got to deliver at the right time and fortunately in the last four minutes we did."
